Today we’d like to introduce you to Harley Warrick.
Harley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved sports. I grew up watching something every day. I actually wanted to go to college for business but changed to Mass Communication after watching the Dallas Mavericks win the NBA Finals in 2011. I loved the media behind the team. Getting to capture moments people would look back on. In 2019, I interned with Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals FC, and Real Monarchs. It was a special year as it was the first time Real Monarchs had won a playoff game and then they won the whole league. When working there, it never felt like work. When Covid hit, I moved back home to Texas. Now I do freelance photography for the local high school. I capture football, basketball, tennis, track, and baseball.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not in the slightest. I remember almost dropping out my freshman year of college because I had so much self doubt. I worked for free for years to be able to get enough experience to be able to charge people. Covid happened when I was working my dream job and I haven’t been able to get back to that level.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer. I do sports mostly. I am proud of how far I have come. I look back at photos when I first started and cringe at how bad they were. I remember being so excited and happy about those photos and it reminds me of how far I have come. I think something that sets me apart from others isn’t my photos, but my love for doing it. Doing sports photography is the only job that has never felt like work. It challenges me every time I pick up a camera. It’s fun to do. I take pride in capturing moments for players and fans. Some of my favorite photos aren’t the ones that will get a bunch of likes on social media, they are the ones that mean something to one or two people.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m not too much of a risk-taker. I usually think things through. As for my work, I do take risks to get photos. I get an idea for a photo and I’ll do what I need to get the perfect shot. I am terrified of heights, but I thought it would be cool to go to the cat walk and work a game from up there. I got really cool photos but was scared the entire time to the point I wouldn’t move my feet until I left.
