Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaiah Ochoa.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Going into college, I wanted to pursue a career in sports broadcasting; however, that field is very competitive. I then made some videos as a joke recapping some games as well as mentioning any sports news. For comparison, it was like a segment on a news channel. As I continued to do it, the idea of starting my own podcast with some of my friends began progressing. Not only did I start the podcast for fun, but it was also to gain some experience in the sports podcast industry; to give myself a competitive advantage compared to others. When creating the podcast, our main point to push forward was that we would be speaking about sports on the podcast. Essentially, I figured I needed to create a name that ties in with sports so that when people heard the name, they would think of sports immediately. I decided that naming it Scoreboard Media was the best option because it sounded clean, and no one had taken the name. To add to that, any sport, whether it is cheer, golf, tennis, or water polo; every universal sport has a scoreboard making it the best name.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The podcast was created on October 22, 2020. During that time, a global pandemic was going on, so we had to result in doing zoom calls. It worked for our budget at the time, but it wasn’t the ideal setup. Sometimes the wifi would crash, making some calls drop, and other times, people would speak over each other unintentionally. We worked through it and finally started doing episodes in the garage of my home. However, with me going away for college, we find ourselves remote again. Not only does production quality go down, but also some issues arise.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The mission of Scoreboard Media is to express what every common fan is thinking of. Nowadays, all major production studios in sports have analysts where they had experience in the major sport and are speaking from the experience. Their opinion does have value; however, the percentage of people who played in a major sport is very low. As a common fan watches the segments with the analyst, it is very popular that the viewer can’t relate to the analyst because they were never part of the exclusive percentage. We’re here to change that. All members of the company have had their experience playing a competitive sport. Sadly, we all haven’t made it to the last dance; thus, on a positive note, it does make us relate to more sports fans.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The end goal of this company is to be bigger than ESPN, with our working app, own website, own TV channel, and be able to name a College Bowl game after our company. The company’s goal is to reach for the stars while allowing young students to gain experience through our company. As I pursued my career, I noticed that all significant sport production companies don’t allow high school students to apply for internships. When you reach the college level, it is nearly impossible for your application to be accepted because most spots fill up due to who you know and not what you know. I want to create a program where we allow interns from high school to college and have two students shadow a person who is working in the field that the student desires. As the intern gains experience, the company also decides whether to offer the intern a job in the future or to refer them to another sports company to fulfill the most opportunity we can offer.
