Life & Work with Jerika Mattson of Ogden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerika Mattson.

Hi Jerika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In January of 2025 I was looking for craft ideas to make my friends some birthday gifts when I came across a photo of a hand embroidered tea towel. I had done some embroidery as a kid, but hadn’t done it for some time. I immediately fell back in love with it! I made it my obsession and decided to open an Etsy shop just a few weeks later.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It actually was pretty smooth getting started! The first time I posted a product drop on Etsy I sold out that same day. At that time I was making bookmarks that looked like tea bags and people loooved them! It was fun and successful, but I was starting to get burnt out on making them, so I made the decision to stop making them and focus on other projects, like embroidery patterns. These haven’t been as popular as the teabag bookmarks but I am having so much fun making them, I feel like that’s what really matters.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently my biggest focus is on making embroidery patterns! I have always loved to draw, it is so fun being able to create a sketch and then bring it to life in new ways with fabric and thread. Then I get to write it into a pattern for other people to enjoy! Just the thought of someone else getting joy from something that I made is so special. Aside from patterns, I also make templates for embroidering on clothes and I offer a few custom items as well, like family portraits and handwriting keepsakes. I also teach embroidery workshops! This business is more than just a financial support for my family, it’s also a community. Nothing makes me happier than hanging out with a group of amazing people getting together to spend some time being crafty!

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I teach embroidery workshops locally! If you’ve ever wanted to learn embroidery, or just try something new, or just want to have some time to be social, I’d love to have you in one of my classes! I also accept some custom orders like family portraits and handwriting keepsakes. Perfect for birthday, Christmas, or other holiday gift ideas. And of course you can always follow along and engage with me on Instagram!
