Today we’d like to introduce you to John Wessling.
Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story starts with finding a passion in competing in sports at a young age, which led me to a career in training and coaching athletes. I have always been an athlete; competing in everything from basketball, soccer, skateboarding, hockey, motocross, cross country running and skiing, and all of that eventually led me to cross country mountain bike racing in my 20’s. Even at a young age, I knew how much sports meant to me. I loved the feeling of competing, win or lose. That led me down a path in endurance sports where I became a cross country skier in high school. Training to ski fast is a long process that takes methodical accuracy 12 months a year to compete at your best when the snow flies. I dove deep into how to be a better ski racer with great coaches like Johnathon Sanborn, Piotr Bednarski, and Chad Salmela. Those three laid the foundation for me to learn and grow as an athlete and coach. I tried to absorb as much information as I could at all times, and eventually started coaching high school ski racers while I was in college. Then, I started training motocross racers and that quickly snowballed into my current career. I have the luxury of working with some of the best athletes in the world and started an online training company (www.TrollTraining.com) where we work with a wide variety of amateur and professional in multiple sports. Through all of this I raced xc mountain bikes as an amateur and professional, winning three Cat 1 National titles and competing on the biggest stage of the sport in two World Cups.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like everything, there has been plenty of ups and downs. Some years I felt like everything was coming to me easy and I was doing a good job coaching, and some years it felt like I couldn’t do anything right. Through all of the lessons, I feel like I’ve been able to become a better and more well-rounded coach and athlete.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in supercross/motocross and endurance sport coaching, operating an online training platform with one of my former athletes Alex Martin. I’m most proud of Alex and I building our company out of passion and helping athletes reach their goals. I think the biggest thing that sets me apart from others is not only coaching sport, but living it. Training and competing helps me pass on knowledge I’ve gained over the last 20 or so years while failing, succeeding, and figuring out how to be better as an athlete.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is having a goal and doing everything in your power to try and achieve that goal. Whether you actually succeed with that goal, the process of going for it is where the magic is.
