Today we’d like to introduce you to Karin King.
Hi Karin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was a young girl, growing up in Southern California, my mother used to take me to Hollywood often. We’d go to tapings of shows, walk the walk of fame and see movies at what used to be called Grauman’s Chinese Theater. I was fascinated by movie magic and dreamed of a day I could be part of it.
Upon moving to Utah in 2012, I soon landed my first job on a tv show. I was ecstatic!
I have now been part of so many incredible productions, with so many wonderful hair and makeup artists. I have been blessed to fulfill so many roles from assistant to department heading hmu. I never could’ve imagined that I’d be living my dream well into my 50’s.
I’m currently helping with hair and makeup on Homestead, and day playing on Y Marshals, the new Yellowstone spinoff.
Thank you to my mom for showing me this incredible industry, supporting my dream, and reminding me that it’s never too late!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The film industry is definitely a struggle sometimes. Trying to find the work life balance can be difficult as days can run 10-17 hours, or more!
It’s been my full time job since 2018, and I have a family, so I know how important it is to take time and enjoy every second with loved ones.
With the pandemic, and the strike, there were a lot of months without consistent work. It was a little scary not knowing the future of film here in Utah.
Business has picked up since, and the opportunities are endless. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed hair and makeup artist for film, television, and other projects. I love making talent feel beautiful in the skin they’re in. I love helping them bring their character to life. We collaborate and find the best looks for them to feel their best! I love doing hair as much as I love doing makeup. Most union shows have you doing one or the other. It’s always a hard choice!
Through some health issues, I feared that I would have to give it up. I’m currently battling Cancer, CLL. I’m proud to say I’ve been able to work throughout my chemo journey. I try so hard to have a positive attitude and give my all to every project, to my team and to my family.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Before I began my full time film career, I was teaching Cosmetology school. I had done a few film and television projects and decided to do it full time. It was definitely a risk leaving a stable, consistent job… but it was a risk worth taking!
