Life & Work with Katie Orndorff-mccoy of Cottonwood Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Orndorff-mccoy

Katie , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Nearly 15 years ago, I discovered my passion for Pilates during a time when my body was undergoing significant changes without any clear explanation. Despite trying endless cardio and gym sessions, nothing seemed to “fix” me. It was frustrating, but everything shifted when I signed up for Private Pilates Sessions. Through this practice, I experienced its transformative power—rehabilitating my body and, in the process, rediscovering my deeper connection to fitness and overall well-being.

I’m originally from the East Coast and moved to Utah nearly six years ago. I continued my private Pilates sessions until I arrived here, but I struggled to find the intimate, “boutique-style” approach I had grown to love. Instead, I tried group classes, but I just couldn’t connect in the same way. That’s when I decided to start my journey toward becoming certified in Mat and Reformer Pilates. I thought, if I can’t find what I’m looking for, I’ll create it myself. It started as a dream I talked about often, unsure of how I’d bring it to life. But with the unwavering support of my family and friends, who encouraged me every step of the way, I made the leap. I left my job at a well-known financial institution and opened KnockOut Pilates by Katie Orndorff.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fortunately, my journey has been surprisingly smooth. I already knew the name I wanted, KnockOut Pilates, so I started by registering it, securing a business license, obtaining an EIN, and setting up insurance for both the building and liability. Then came the creative side: designing a logo and arranging for professional photos.

The most challenging parts of the process were building the website and navigating the maze of health insurance options. Once everything was set up and ready to go, I had to be patient and wait for clients to find me. I didn’t do much advertising initially, but I was fortunate enough to secure a spot in the local paper, thanks to getting my business license in Cottonwood Heights. The team there was fantastic to work with, and it helped me gain some early visibility.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My studio is a cozy, boutique-style space that my husband Brian built above our detached garage, designed to offer a more personal and intimate Pilates experience. I specialize in Private and Semi-Private Reformer Pilates sessions, and I have no interest in running large classes. While they can be effective for some, that’s just not my niche.

I spend 2-3 days a week with my clients, creating individualized plans tailored specifically to their needs. This allows me to focus on their form and progress in a way that feels personal and intentional. Each session is customized, with music selected to match their preferences, and I write up their plan for the day on an old-fashioned dry erase board—complete with their name. We can always adjust as needed, but there’s something truly special about having a workout designed just for you in a quiet, focused setting.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe the key to my success lies in never expanding beyond what feels true to my vision and staying deeply connected to the niche that sets me apart. These sessions are personal—each one is tailored to the individual, and I develop meaningful relationships with my clients. That connection is something I never want to lose.

I feel just as invested in their progress as they are in their own. Watching their bodies and confidence transform is incredibly rewarding, and it’s honestly the best kind of “advertising” I could ask for. We like to joke around and say, “Body by Katie,” which always brings a smile. At the end of the day, I’m proud to put my name on your transformation.

A special shout-out to my husband, Brian, and my son, Blake, for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout this entire journey. I couldn’t have done it without them.
