Life & Work with Kimberlee Hummel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberlee Hummel, Owner of Skin Spa Utah.

Kimberlee, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I became a Licensed Master Aesthetician in 2001, and this is a second career for me. I worked in financial services for a number of years, but I’ve always been passionate about skincare. When I first became an aesthetician, I was still working in that industry and opened a small spa in Holladay, Utah. In 2005, my dad passed away from cancer and I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and I made the decision to leave my career at the investment company I worked for and pursue a career in aesthetics.

Over those first few years, I sometimes worked multiple jobs to support my family as a single mom. I was a makeup artist, flight attendant, and a laser technician for a medical spa. Since 2009, I have been blessed to work solely on my business, Skin Spa Utah.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The skincare industry is extremely competitive and there are so many options for consumers to choose from. Lots of people price shop and Groupon shop, and I’ve always challenged myself to never devalue what I have to offer.

As a small business owner, I’m always challenged to play numerous roles. I’m literally a one-woman show…. so I’m responsible for not only providing services, but also marketing, answering the phones, fulfilling orders, researching new technology and products, keeping my studio clean and inviting, and building my clientele. I often feel like there is never a time I’m not working to stay current and be able to offer my clients superior, results-oriented options.

COVID was difficult for our industry. I was fortunately well established before we were forced to shut down. I use that time to shift my focus to virtual appointments and product fulfillment, and also to study to learn about a new skin revision line that I now offer. When I returned to work, I, with purpose, shifted the focus of my business to focus on acne and skin revision and stopped offering a number of services I had offered previously. This was difficult and risky, but it provided my clients with more results-oriented options and catapulted my business to where it is now and I’m very proud of that.

Through all the challenges of being a small business owner, I go to work joyful every day. I’m so grateful to get to do what I love, and even more grateful to be able to make a difference in so many lives at Skin Spa Utah.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Skin Spa Utah is a results-oriented skin revision clinic, and I’m known for being trusted skin revision partner for my clients. I’ve been a Licensed Master Aesthetician for nearly 20 years. I am one of the most experienced acne treatment aestheticians in Utah and I’ve won awards for my work with my acne clients. My acne bootcamp has a 95% clear rate without medication and I work with clients to know how to keep their skin clear long term. Skin Spa Utah is a two-time Best of State award recipient.

Last September, I became a DMK Skin Revision Specialist and received my DMK paramedical certification in January 2021. Even though Skin Spa Utah is one of the newest DMK clinics in Utah, we are the top producing clinic in the entire state. The results-oriented treatments and home prescriptives offered at Skin Spa Utah enable clients to achieve visible, sustainable, long term results that increase confidence and empower clients to feel their best.

In addition to skin revision, I am also a permanent makeup artist. I have trained in Europe and am known as one of the top artists in Utah. In addition to eyebrow, eyeliner, and lip treatments offered by most artists, I also specialize is 3D areola restoration for breast cancer survivors. I have been featured on Good Things Utah and on KUTV News for my work and my expertise in Utah’s permanent makeup community.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe this industry will mostly continue in the direction it’s been going for a very long time. Many clients seek immediate results and seek services where they can achieve quick results with minimal treatments. However, there are so many people who are looking for non-invasive options that may take a bit longer but ultimately lead to healthy, beautiful skin. Skin Spa Utah gives clients some really incredible, results-oriented options to achieve results without invasive procedures like surgery or injections. I am passionate about helping my clients age beautifully and be confident about their skin for life.
