Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Canelon
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started with my passion for drawing when I was a kid. Growing up in Venezuela, I had to face incredible challenges but even then, when I found my passion for Photoshop in High-school, I decided to purse Graphic Design as a profession.
It was the most fulfilling choice I could’ve taken.
There I met my Photography teacher and through her classes, fell in love with the medium. For some reason, the ability to create something so deep in just an instant, was incredibly satisfying.
Ever since I’ve practiced multiple art mediums, as I cannot stay still for even a second, but Photography has the bigger pull out of all of them.
For me Photography is a way of documenting and sharing my life. Some of my favorite moments are encapsulated in photos, and I enjoy looking back and feeling myself transported to that instant.
On another hand—is a great way to explore myself. Who I am, what I enjoy and what do I stand for. It’s an extremely liberating medium that has a low barrier of entry but a huge ceiling of skill. Thus, why I enjoy it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Most of the skills I’ve learned have been through pretty rough, basic equipment or none whatsoever. I had to build over the years and thanks to gifts from amazing people.
I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the unrelenting support of my parents, family and my dearest friends.
Even so, the journey and the process are my favorite aspect of it all. Discovering something new, a different technique, a strange perspective. It all adds on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a multi-media artist, if I’m being completely honest.
While Photography may be my main and most attractive medium (as far as other people tell me). I cannot just lock myself down to one thing.
As with anything in life, you can learn from everything you study and/or experience. My knowledge from drawing and painting has served me in Photography. My knowledge in Graphic Design crosses over my Videography skills and allows me to improve certain aspects.
You can grab bits and pieces of each practice, and combine them to improve them as a whole.
It’s not really complicated either. If you break down everything to its basics, you find similar patterns.
What I’m most proud of is my never ending curiosity. I have a passion for life and everything it entails. People, society, culture, creativity—it all seems interesting to me and pushes me to learn.
As such I’m unable to get stuck on just one subject. And it nurtures my view of the world, which I can express through my work.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Patience and consistency.
It doesn’t matter how hard you work if you don’t put the same effort into resting. A good balance is the golden ticket.
One day I may do a lot, another I may do just a little; it all adds up.
