Today we’d like to introduce you to Luisa Maggioni.
Hi Luisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started singing before I could speak! Music has always been a huge part of my life and it is what taught me to love myself — I dealt with an eating disorder when I was 12 years old, and music was what helped me get out of it. Because of that experience, I walked out with a passion to use music to help others through what they are going through, as it had helped me.
I really started to build a career in music, and eventually moved to LA. Unfortunately, this led me to deal with anorexia again — but worse than ever before because I believed the lie that what I looked like meant more than what I had to say. This time, anorexia almost took my life.
I was signed to a record label in Italy, living half of the year in LA and the other half in Rome, and it seemed like I had everything I ever wanted… yet I was so miserable and empty. I moved back to Miami in complete defeat and little did I know, that this dark moment in my life was the most important time of my life.
I moved back to Miami and at the worst moment in my journey with anorexia, I walked into Vous Church and had an encounter with God that not only saved my life but changed my life forever. I truly believe that when a seed is planted, it has to stay in that dark area under pressure before it can finally bloom.
I know this now, looking back. Since then, I’m fully recovered from anorexia, healthy, joyful, happily married, and making music with my husband (guitarist/producer) for the right reasons, to share my story and our story.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As I mentioned previously, it has not been a smooth road at all. The music industry, and life in general, can be very dark and demanding at times. It’s easy to believe the lie that what’s on the outside matters more than what’s on the inside. It’s easy to see peoples’ highlight reels on Instagram, compare yourself, and think your worth is dependent on the superficial things in life.
If anything, my journey has taught me that I am exactly where I need to be right now, and you are too! There is something to learn in every season and there is beauty in every season. Your looks do not define you. Your story matters and people need to hear it! What you have to say is much more important than how “you look”.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now, I’m most proud of the duo that I have with my husband, Claudio. It’s called L+U. We are working on new music currently, in English and Spanish, that we hope people can listen to and identify with. It’s truly us and our life — in every aspect.
Our music videos all show an important, authentic moment in our lives — for example, our latest music video for our single “ENCHULE” was filmed at our wedding! We want to tell stories, the good and the not-so-good so that our listeners can know they are not alone and that there is something beautiful in every season if you just look for it.
What matters most to you?
My husband and my family, first of all. I am so, so close to my family. I would not be where I am without them and without my husband who pushes me to be the best version of myself. Secondly, what matters most to me is making sure those around me feel loved, known, and heard. I know what it feels like to be alone in a dark situation so it’s imperative for me to help those going through difficult times.
