Life & Work with Maddie Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Smith.

Hi Maddie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Maddie Smith, I’m 24 years old, and I’m the creator of a clothing brand called “TripSurfer.” It started a few years ago when I was in college for the film. School quickly became extremely boring so I spent most of my time drawing and thinking about how I’d rather be spending my time. This quickly became my escape and was essentially how I came up with the idea for my clothing line. Originally called “Landlocked,” the concept of the clothing brand, along with the designs, morphed over the next year into something a bit more colorful and lot trippier.

At the same time, I took a job working for my brother-in-law, working in a print shop. This gave me a huge leg up, as I now had the means to turn my concept into a real clothing brand. I spent many months finalizing my designs and setting up my website and finally launched the brand in March of 2022.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a roller coaster for sure. The creative energy comes and goes, sometimes I lose inspiration, and other times I lack motivation. One of the hardest parts was spending so much time working on designs and knowing I wouldn’t see any money for a while, if at all. But it’s definitely starting to pay off. Still, it’s definitely tiring working all day, then coming home only to do more work, and having very limited free time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
TripSurfer was created to foster a community of free spirits who dare to live the kind of life that goes beyond society’s expectations. With vibrant, colorful, and imaginative designs, TripSurfer stands out from the other brands by being truly unique. The style is essentially streetwear that meets beachwear. Our designs are inspired by the idea of a post-apocalyptic world that’s always got perfect waves.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
TripSurfer has been worn by musicians from OAR, Iration, The Elovaters, and many to come. We love working with local bands as well and even collaborating on merch with them!
