Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mikell Hirschi.
Hi Mikell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’m Mikell – the owner of Hirsch & Spark! I’m a wife and mom to 4 incredible children. I worked in different roles for 16 years in a hospital setting – most recently in hospital administration. I was feeling really comfortable there but realized I wanted something that got me excited to go to work every day. I took a piercing course and instantly fell in love!
I was just initially planning on doing piercings for friends and family, but I have started getting busy with referrals! The perfect opportunity kind of fell in my lap for a space at Studio 52 in Bountiful, and that’s where I am now! I added permanent jewelry to the lineup of services and have really loved doing that as well. I realized I was so excited every time I went to work at the studio, so I ended up leaving my job in the hospital setting.
It was quite a big leap, but it has allowed me to have more time at home with my family and still do work, which excites me! It’s given me better balance and has been such an incredible journey!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think there are always challenges in starting a small business – making sure you’re checking all the boxes and doing things correctly. I was jumping into something. I knew I’d have to figure a few things out along the way, and that felt a bit scary at first!
There’s a learning curve in many different aspects. I learned the business side of things, learned new services to offer, and learned a lot about myself in the process!
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I offer hollow needle piercings and permanent jewelry and will soon have a full charm bar for custom charm necklaces. They’re all fun options that allow me to be creative, but my favorite service is piercings.
I really enjoy working with kids and babies and specialize in piercing little ears! I never found that intimidating, and it’s a service many piercers don’t offer. I love getting to know families that bring their kids in, and I feel honored that they trust me.
I’ve worked really hard to create a space that is fun and funky for things like girls’ nights and bachelorette parties but is also very family-friendly. Want the whole family to come in for your child’s first ear piercings? Bring them in! I’ve created a comfortable space that fits everyone, and I’m really proud of that!

I love Bountiful so much. I was born and raised here, and I don’t know I’ll ever leave! It’s family-friendly and offers everything you could possibly need, yet it’s just a few minutes from downtown SLC.
