Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriam Gersdorf.
Hi Miriam, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I first moved to Utah, my boyfriend (now husband) took me on my very first hike to the summit of Mount Timpanogos. It’s peak is at just under 12,000 ft and is a 16.8 miles round trip hike with over 5,000 ft of elevation gain. I had moved here from sea level, where I grew up in New Jersey. I showed up at the trailhead that morning in a pair of Keds and only a water bottle. Despite it being the 4th of July, there was still a lot of snow on the mountain. After much slipping and sliding, we reached Emerald Lake a few miles from the summit. All the other hikers had spikes and ice axes! Needless to say, I insisted we turn around and try another time when we were better prepared.
Despite those crazy beginnings, I was hooked and have been hiking and exploring ever since. This experience and many others led me to offer hiking inspiration and education to novice and experienced hikers through ExploreHikeTeach.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve been an avid hiker for 25+ years. ExploreHikeTeach began as a passion project to help others get out on the trail and explore the outdoors. While I have extensive knowledge about available hikes and adventures throughout the West, I have no formal training in marketing, photography, graphic, or web design.
When I jumped into this passion project, I spent countless hours learning the skills mentioned above through experts in the industry, Google, and good old-fashioned trial and error. It has been very time-consuming with many long hours and late nights after my day job as an educator, but it doesn’t always feel like work when you are doing something you love!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Utah-based hiker and outdoor adventurer. As a content creator for my Instagram account @explore.hike.teach and blog, Miriam Hikes and Explores, I use visual storytelling to inspire everyone to get outdoors. The focus of my account and blog is to empower all people to find their next favorite adventure, whether it’s a world-renowned hike or a quiet gem. My followers come to my Instagram page and blog for unique hikes, humor, and outdoor education. I also create content for brands and the travel tourism industry to build awareness and drive business to those outlets.
What does success mean to you?
I know I am successful when I get messages from my followers sharing an experience they’ve had on the trail, implementing or using a skill or product that has enhanced their outdoor experience.
