Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Powell.
Hi Morgan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started taking clients in fall of 2010. I had taken several photography classes prior to this and loved the medium but knew that I would never photograph weddings, too much pressure. I had a good friend that had recently got engaged and asked if I would capture her wedding day. As nervous as I was, I was also born with the, “how hard could it be?” gene and said yes.
The couple was married in the Salt Lake LDS temple, in January, with a high of 15 degrees, and all portraits were taken outside. I immediately fell in love with weddings. Coming home I decided that was what I wanted to photograph. I spent the next 18 months second shooting for various local to Utah photographers while building a clientele.
Since then I have photographed weddings and events across the globe including Europe, Africa, and the Carribean. I primarily shoot weddings and events in Utah and have recently expanded into New England.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been incredibly blessed and it has been a fairly smooth road. One struggle I have had to overcome is moving between client budgets. As my talent and skills improved finding the clients that are a great fit for what I do.
Most of my struggles have been internal as photography is an art and personal. Finding the balance of my voice as an artist and telling the story my clients want told is always a balancing act.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wedding, portrait, and event photography. Most of my clients would say my specialty is telling the story of the event and/or couple and capturing the in-between, unscripted moments. I prioritize the emotions of the wedding day, mom helping get ready, dad seeing his daughter as a bride for the first time. I keep posed portraits to a minimum so my couples can enjoy their wedding day.
One of the coolest things I have gotten to do was photograph a traditional Maasai wedding ceremony in Tanzania. Being in a position to capture such a unique wedding ceremony is and will probably always be a highlight for me.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I love what I do and am humbled by those that choose to trust me with such an important moment in their lives. I don’t take that responsibility lightly.
