Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena Mackerell.
Serena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Several years ago, my sisters organized an infertility awareness event to raise funds for the fertility treatments my husband and I needed. The event was an overwhelming success, inspiring us to establish our own foundation dedicated to increasing awareness of infertility and raising funds to provide grants to individuals and couples in our local infertility community seeking treatment.
Since founding the organization in 2012, we have awarded 108 grants to individuals and couples pursuing fertility treatment, helping contribute to the birth of more than 75 babies. Our mission continues to be providing hope, support, and financial assistance to those navigating the challenges of infertility.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to run a nonprofit organization without prior experience. Thankfully, our clinical partners have been incredible supporters every step of the way. Their generosity, guidance, and dedication to helping families overcome infertility have made our work possible. We are deeply grateful for their donations, partnership, and unwavering commitment to our mission.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I establish and maintain relationships with our clinical partners, coordinate event planning and execution, and oversee the management of our registration and grant application platforms.
What matters most to you? Why?
Nothing matters more to me than my family. After experiencing the challenges of infertility firsthand, my husband and I cherish our children even more deeply. They are the greatest blessing in our lives and the inspiration behind everything we do. Knowing how difficult the journey to parenthood can be, I am motivated to help others pursue their dreams of building a family and experience the same joy that we have been fortunate to find.
