Life & Work with Skylar Thomson of SALT LAKE CITY

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Thomson.

Hi Skylar, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always loved cooking. I first found my passion for it when I was just a kid and my dad was a Chef. I would go with him to different events and help him with his catering business. I’ve always loved being the guy at the grill or making a dish for the potluck. That is what led me to culinary school, than to my first job in the in the industry as a breakfast cook. I found that I was good at what I was doing and that I loved it and had a passion for it which pushed me forward to many different restaurants from Utah to Oregon learning different menus and different ways to cook. I love how food brings people together whether its a wedding, big events, or even just a backyard barbecue or block party. Food is always a reason to get together. My background is a mix of american and Mexican culture and cuisine and my wife is Native Hawaiian born Maui, which has inspired our fusion style menu.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We’ve definitely had our setbacks and struggles. If its not the truck breaking down its equipment failing and needing to be replaced. But I’ve definitely learned alot, I’m not than just a Chef now. I’m also an electrician, a plumber, refrigeration tech, and a mechanic!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in Gourmet Street food. We are known for our Fish n chips, Hawaiian inspired Ricebowls and plates, our Fusion style Seafood Tacos and Gourmet Burgers amd fries. I am most proud of the love and determination my wife and I have even with all the curveball life has thrown us.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Catering with my dad and Sunday potlucks with my grandpa when he was pastor at the Japanese Presbyterian Church Downtown.
