Life & Work with Sophia Mai of West Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Mai.

Hi Sophia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been a nail technician for 18 years now, but when I first came to the U.S., I had no idea this would be the path I’d fall in love with. Back in Vietnam, I studied architecture—art has always been a big part of who I am. When I moved here, I didn’t have family or financial support, and getting a nail license was something I could afford and start quickly. I didn’t expect to love it so much.

As I started working, I realized how creative this field could be. I love the artistic side of nails—being able to draw, design, and bring a client’s vision to life. It’s like therapy for me. Seeing my clients happy, hearing their ideas, and making them feel beautiful—it fuels me.

In my early years, I attended many international nail shows and even entered a few competitions. That’s where I learned a lot of my techniques and stayed on top of trends.

Every part of my journey—from architecture dreams in Vietnam to becoming a nail artist here—has shaped me. Now I run a business I love, serving amazing clients who appreciate what I do. And I still get to create art every day. That’s the dream for me

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This is actually my third business now. When I started my first nail salon, it was far from easy. I was new to the U.S., so I had to learn everything—from hiring a general contractor to understanding the laws here. I literally built that salon from the ground up. It was a struggle, but it taught me everything about grit and perseverance.

After 12 years of running my second salon, I went through postpartum depression. My doctor told me I needed to take something off my plate, and at the time, the business was a major source of stress. I made the hard choice to put my family first and sold it.

Now I’m back—stronger, wiser, and more passionate than ever. This new business is a reflection of everything I’ve learned, and I’m excited to grow it into something really special

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Tell us about yourself – What do you do, what do you specialize in, and what are you known for?

I’m a passionate nail artist who truly loves what I do. I specialize in hand-drawn nail art, 3D designs, and creative, customized looks that reflect each client’s unique personality and style. I’m known for being detail-oriented and honest—I always take the time to discuss ideas with my clients before we start, so we’re on the same page and can create something special together. I have a strong eye for art, and honestly, if I can see it, I can draw it. That’s one of my favorite things about what I do—translating inspiration into wearable art.

What are you most proud of?

I take a lot of pride in making people feel confident and beautiful when they leave my chair. There’s no better feeling than seeing someone light up after a set, knowing they’re going to get compliments everywhere they go. That’s what makes me proud—seeing my work make someone feel amazing about themselves.

What sets you apart from others?

I’d say my honesty, creativity, and drive to always improve set me apart. I’m very straightforward with my clients—I care about the final result just as much as they do, so I always keep it real about what will work and what won’t. I’m constantly learning and keeping up with trends because I want to offer fresh, high-quality designs every time. My goal is to make sure each person who walks through my door leaves with not just beautiful nails, but also a great experience.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that might surprise people about me is that my background is deeply rooted in art—I’ve always had a strong eye for detail and creativity. Nails just became my canvas. What started as a personal outlet quickly turned into a full-blown passion, and now a career. I take my craft seriously, but I always add a little edge and personality to everything I do. It’s not just about pretty nails—it’s about creating art that speaks, with a little attitude to match.
