Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzette Meyers
Hi Suzette, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My childhood in the mountains of Idaho cultivated a deep appreciation for living close to nature and the beauty of the natural world. As a child, I was inspired by my grandfather. After working a full day on the ranch taking care of Long-Horn Cattle and his favorite Quarter horses he would go to his workshop to tool leather, create jewelry & sculptures out of metal and fire. As a young girl, I recall the hours spent together at his bench. My grandfather inspired me to create and I have always admired his impact as a local folk artist.
As an artist, my inspirations come from continuing this legacy of creation. I have always been drawn to silver smithing and took my first class at 15. Since moving to Utah, I continue to find inspiration in the relationship between the earthly and ethereal through my craft.
Established in 2024, Silver Mountain MetalSmith celebrates this reverence, as I lovingly incorporate a variety of natural stones, leather, materials & silver to design hand-forged jewelry. The creative process offers a simultaneously meditative and enlivening practice. I especially love to collaborate with fellow artisans and clients to foster connection and create heirloom pieces that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey was meant to be. I have always had the passion to create into metal, using natural materials, such as rocks, leather, animals claws or ivory, and other creative materials, since I was a young girl. I was inspired by my family heritage and watching my grandfather come in off the ranch to create late into the evening with metal, leather and fire.
Since January I have been able to realize my dream of investing into Silver Mountain MetalSmith and have had some obstacles. Mostly, self talk with myself. Unnecessarily, comparing myself to other smiths and their level of skill. Instead I chose to talk to myself about creating out of love, not pressure. This is an expression of me, and I get to learn about myself while creating. Recently, the happiest part of my journey, was becoming a vendor at Garder Village, in Seven Gables Mercantile. In my journey, each day, is determined by how I talk to myself. No doubt, the growth I have had, in my smithing and marketing, is watching how other succeed, follow inspiration, NEVER go to my bench when I feel LIKE I SHOULD…it is always when I want to create.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a metalsmith in the Salt Lake city area. What sets me apart from Other is that I am me. My style is my own, especially as my development continues as I create. I feel for clarity and look at every day life for inspiration.
What does success mean to you?
Success, for me, is having a mindset of abundance in my creating. To create a piece, everyday or heirloom, that is hand forged to last. Created with passion, purpose and loving intention. To laugh, to appreciate the contrast and to have milestones, personal and professional, achieved, and yet to achieve
