Life & Work with Tina Filippi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Filippi.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area and started my career at an Investment firm right out of high school in an admin role. I was also going to school full-time to be an Emergency Responder.

I spent 4 years of my career focused on client events and event planning but always had a love for helping people so once my degree finished, I found myself departing from my current job as a Client Programs Manager to work as an EMT on an ambulance. I loved working as an EMT but unfortunately in 2012, I was diagnosed with phyllodes tumors and had to switch careers to focus on surgery and recovery.

I re-joined the investment firm in a recruiting position. Going through the medical experience I had, it gave me a lot of time to think of what I wanted to do next. I loved my job in recruiting but I still felt the need to want to help people in some other capacity. In 2015, I went back to school for my certifications in Personal training and nutrition and started my company, Fearless Fitness which was an independently owned training and nutrition coaching company.

I continued to grow my career in two areas: Recruitment in the Finance/Fintech industry and owning my own business. I switched industries in 2016 when I joined a Fintech company out of San Francisco which gave me the opportunity to move to Salt Lake City where I helped build an entire engineering team and diversity and inclusion program in the Lehi area. I expanded my personal business by adding a virtual component to my programs, allowing me to keep my clients that were California  while exploring my new career here in Utah.

In 2020 when Covid began, I was a part of a large layoff with the company that moved me here and I had a realization that I wanted to continue to help people still, not only find employment in such a crazy time but also stay healthy in the middle of a global pandemic.

Today, I continue to take clients in a small capacity virtually but a lot of my work now is in a fast-growing tech company in Lehi where I have had a huge impact in building their engineering teams.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely had its ups and downs.

Going through a traumatic medical experience, moving to a whole new state alone, and not knowing anyone, to covid layoffs, it was tough but perseverance is key.

I was able to keep my business thriving and find a job that I love and that I am excelling at.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main career focused has been in recruitment as a Sr. Technical Recruiting Lead at a tech company in Lehi. I started as the sole recruiter over the majority of our tech teams and I specialize in recruiting top talent in engineering. I am known for always getting it done.

I do all I can to make sure that I can excel in my role, help mentor people around me, and always look to provide a voice of resource. I am most proud of the growth I have made in this position. I have been awarded Recruiter of the Year for the build-out of our engineering teams in 2021.

I think what sets me apart from others is the perseverance I have in the face of the unknown. Working in a start-up can be very ambiguous, you have to pivot quickly and things change fast. You have to adapt quickly while still hitting goals and targets and I think the experience I have had in my career, has prepared me for this.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I like calculated risks but I am also open to just going for it if it feels right.

I took a huge risk moving my whole life to Utah with a company that a year later laid me off. I do not regret it one bit, it was a huge learning experience and an opportunity to really push myself out of my comfort zone.
