Life & Work with Zarena Rigby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zarena Rigby.

Zarena Rigby

Hi Zarena, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Moonlit Bandit in 2015. It’s been through many phases. Mainly, it serves as an outlet for my artistic urges, and being a neurodivergent person it’s never been easy to stick to one thing. What has stuck is metal smithing and creating jewelry.

It started as a blog. Then from 2016-2019, I dabbled in mainly “body essentials” like soaps & beard oils. But my heart wasn’t in it. I love the challenge of jewelry making and so this is what has stuck and I hope to further my abilities with metal smithing in general.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a small business and not having to rely on income makes the journey a little easier. You could classify it as more of a “hobby”.

What can be challenging is that on top of having a separate full-time job, 3 animals & a partner, and a life; I also need to compile and create content, manage orders and social platforms, and make all the things. It all kind of gets discouraging sometimes but it can also be fun and rewarding.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I mostly use and recycle old silverware that is donated to me or that I buy or find at yard sales/thrift shops.

Some items I use with all new metal. I have no preference, I just enjoy doing it and it can be fun to say, “Hey your ring was made from an old cheese knife!”

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting.
Consistency builds skill, but remember that mental health is so important, especially when pursuing passions. So doll don’t be afraid to take breaks if you need them. Burnout is real.
