Today we’d like to introduce you to Aldrin Suson.
Hi Aldrin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I truly believe that the taste for fashion is something that I was born with. My love it started at a very young age. I was very fascinated by beautiful, colorful clothes. I was intrigued when I see people wear clothes that are out-of-the-ordinary. I started reading numerous fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. My fashion sense really catapulted when the actress Terri Hatcher was featured on the front cover of Vanity Fair in October 2006. She looked so glamorous and chic even though she was wearing an all white oversized knotted sweater on the cover. The way how the stylist styled her was superb. From that moment on, fashion was my dream. Getting my degree in Public Relations was the first step of my fashion career. I worked for numerous public relations agencies in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles areas. However, being a PR agent was not really my passion and drive because it is more on the actor’s image, not fashion. Being a PR agent, I have to sit in front of my MacBook and look for pictures on the internet that featured our celebrity clients. I sent out PR gifts for celebrities hoping that one or two celebrities will accidentally wear the gift in public and got featured in a magazine or website such as People or OK magazine. In short, I was basically a propagandist because I have to make sure that the public will perceive my clients in a positive manner.
I finally got a big break in fashion when I got a call to be a wardrobe stylist in a short-lived show called ‘Talentless.’ It was basically a dream for me yet stressful because it was my first big styling gig and styled real upcoming celebrities. I was in charge of styling all 6 actors including the main actor and the host of the show which is insane.
For the main star, I have to come up with at least 13 to 15 outfits from accessories to shoes in one episode plus 2-3 backup outfits just in case the director might altered some scenes. It was a challenge because not only do I have to stay true to my styling aesthetic. I also have to incorporate the main actor’s personality and the show’s expectations from the actor’s clothes per scene and episode. It took me a couple of weeks to plan their outfits and one day to finalize all 15 outfits for the main actor before shooting. With little resources, all of the six actors were looking chic and stunning in front of the camera.
Not only I get to style actors in a TV show, I also got the chance to style creators and influencers. When Instagram and YouTube blew up in the mainstream media, I got to work with a lot of LA-based creators. Since they have to make a variety of public appearances or just have a simple brunch with friends, they needed to look good to attract their fans and new audiences to their social media accounts.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
ABSOLUTELY NOT a smooth road for me darling! Being a fashion stylist requires a significant amount of planning, budgeting, collaborating, and delegating. When COVID hits, everything stops. The struggle was VERY REAL from that moment on. I have to adapt and evolve my way of thinking on how I do my business or else I will lose everything. At first, I didn’t know what to do because I was not getting any emails and calls for styling gigs. I was stuck at my place waiting. I was emailing my private clients and producers asking them if there is any job for me and to no response.
Being an LA-based stylist, we have five seasons: winter, fall, spring, summer, and awards. The award season is the only season that matters the most. Award season is the most important season for a stylist to get noticed in the fashion industry. During COVID, all red carpet events were postponed indefinitely. All fashion shows were also canceled. All of the award shows were axed or got rescheduled to Zoom.
In order for me to survive, I turned to blogging. I amped up my social media accounts such as Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. I was posting pictures and videos regularly on my social media accounts. I murdered those hashtags in order for me to get noticed. I tagged verified influencers and fashion brands just to say that ‘I am here willing to work with you’.
I did many collaborations with different fashion brands in New York, Los Angeles, and Canada. Some of those collaborations were not fashion related; however, I made sure that those collabs are turned into fashion related by styling the models in a very fashionable and stylish way in order for me to stay relevant in the fashion industry.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In short, I play with clothes for a living. I am a fashion stylist who knows how to put emphasis on the positive qualities of my clients on how they dress. I communicate, choose and collaborate with models, actors, and influencers to pick the right outfit to complement and meet their visual expectations. I help them with their outfits for their private events, big parties, and photography sessions. I will meet with them in order to discuss their preferences and collaborate with them in picking the right and fabulous outfit for that specific red carpet event. I keep up-to-date on what’s the latest trends in fashion. I have to know who is the next big fashion brand. I create looks for clients that will match their personality, uniqueness and aesthetics. Being a stylist in Los Angeles and Riverside, I do wear a lot of hats when it comes to my job; however, my specialty is 100% fashion/wardrobe styling. I basically specialize in eyeing for details because fashion is a subjective word. Nevertheless, the eye for detail is not as simple as it looks. It is a skill that I was born into and requires conscientious training. My knowledge of fashion trends, color schemes and designer labels is very much impeccable and immaculate. I am always involved in selection of clothings for my clients. I also scout out locations for the next photoshoots, and what those locations are best for. During shoots, I am fitting clients, choosing accessories, and adjust scenes when required.
I am known for my over-the-top, imaginative Moschino-inspired outfits. It is an innovative, colorful – sometimes eccentric – stylishness that can make me stand out in a sea of black and neutral clothings. Some people may say that my style is a novelty, but I simply called it a walking art. I truly J’adore my style. It screams positivity with the creative use of fierceness and fabulousness. It is audacious to say the least because I tend to wear prints after prints after prints in one outfit. Of course, I don’t want to forget my bright neon-colored accessories such as handbags, belt bags, shoes/heels, or wide-brim hats. I truly believe that the clothes I wear are the most influential and apparent forms of my personal expression. Fashion is the extension of my character, my attitude, and my way of expressing my inner ferocity to the world.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Aside from playing clothes for a living, I am also a nurse and a trekker. Many people knew me for my total love for fashion, but few people know me as a nurse and a nature lover. Many people may think that being a nurse and stylist is a complete bonkers, but I say it is a peculiar combination in a good way. Not only I get to change a patient’s life, I also get to change nature’s life. Working as a nurse gives me the joy and delicate obligation of caring for wounded and dying patients from infants to geriatric patients. Being in the profession also gives me the opportunity to make a big difference in my patient’s lives by giving them my therapeutic hands. I personally believe that in this world we need people who are very willing to heal and cure, and I am willing to do those.
On the other hand, listening to my patients about their concerns is basically enough to comfort them. For me, being a nurse is beyond the paycheck; it is about enhancing their lives and encouraging their wellness. As a nurse, I do play a very important role in my patients’ lives by promoting public health. It is all about promoting the patients’ quality of life for them such as focusing on disease prevention and changing their behavior regarding health and wellness.
When I am not educating my patients about health and prevention, I am ‘one with nature’ meaning that a trekker during my free time. Being with nature is truly a breathtaking moment. I get the first-class experience of what nature can do. Zion National Park in southern Utah is one of my absolute favorites. Zion is truly a magnificent place to be. Describing Zion with the word magnificent is accurately underrated. There are no words to describe Zion National Park. PERIOD!
The trail for Angels Landing is my to-do when I visit Zion National Park. It is a very strenuous hike, but I do not back down of that challenge. It did take me about 5 hours in total to finish the trail; however, the very top of Angels Landing is the most munificent, mammoth, melodious, melodic, and mellifluous.
