Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Boynton.
Hi Alexandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Alexandra Boynton and I am a florist-farmer in Sonoma County, CA. I am a mom of 3 and my husband is a Wildland Firefighter. I was a Kindergarten Teacher for 8 years and always had a passion for gardening. I wanted to pursue it full-time once we started a family. I started taking classes on flower farming. and in 2018 began renting a 1/4 acre farming space here in Sonoma County.
In my first season of flower farming, I started a CSA subscription service, brought my flowers to the wholesale market and started selling, and began doing small weddings. Flash forward almost 5 years later and 3 kids later and we are an entirely family-run flower farm. My husband and I work the farm throughout the year growing all kinds of cut flower varieties. I currently sell my flowers wholesale and do over 50 events and weddings each year. We work the land with the utmost care and use sustainable practices.
Our kids run around the garden and are constantly out there with us, so we are conscious caretakers of the land we grew on and passionate about providing quality, fresh-cut flowers to our community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Gardening is a new experience every year, we are constantly adapting and changing throughout the year. From invasive animals to weather, we had a rough few years of wildfires in Sonoma County that cause a lot of damage to our flowers.
We have had every curve ball thrown our way. Sharing the successes and failures with our children has been such an incredible opportunity. and display hard work and resiliency.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in weddings and events. We have had some incredible opportunities to work with all different couples and to make their wedding vision come to life.
We love to work with each couple to curate beautiful, unique wedding designs using seasonal fresh flowers.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
It has been incredible to watch the evolution of the flower market. There had been a huge push here in the United States from the consumer for local flowers.
As the years go in, it has been incredible to watch small, local flower farms getting a lot of support. We have truly enjoyed being able to bring fresh flowers to our community.
