Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Zambrano. Them and their team share their story with us below:
It’s always summer here at the Colombian Marketplace! We specialize in resort-wear and destination apparel for your vacations or special events – available and easy to buy all year long! Our boutique highlights Colombian brands, emerging designers, and many unique, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted, and artisanal fashions. We curate with attention to detail, and quality to bring you a unique fashion experience.
All pieces are handcrafted in Colombia and throughout South America where the brands employ and work with artisans, single mothers, or communities that have been dedicated to their craft for generations. These handcrafted goods help them generate income to provide for their families and is a mission we are VERY proud to support.
Our Company was founded in 2017 after the owners, Andrea Zambrano (Colombian) and Brian Dixon (American) married. After moving to Salt Lake City from her native country of Colombia, Andrea found herself missing the beautiful, high-quality fashion she was accustomed to in her homeland.
She then took matters into her own hands and founded The Colombian Marketplace, with the goal of introducing beautiful, high-end, Colombian-inspired fashion to the United States.
Recently, The Colombian Marketplace opened a shared, collective retail space at The Gateway in downtown Salt Lake City making this the only women-owned, Latina-inspired, resort-wear store in the state of Utah.
Thank you for being part of our community and supporting these amazing women and minority collective!
Happy resort life!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As entrepreneurs and business owners, we have to face a lot of different challenges, but those challenges are the ones that help us grow. To build a business from zero in a foreign country is even more challenging. I have to say overall we have been very fortunate we have learned from the process, try to improve every day, and what I can say may be the most difficult part is surviving a very competitive market being a small business. But when you believe in what you are doing – and especially the causes you are supporting – it makes it easier to get through the hard times. And I absolutely love what I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a 38-year-old Colombian photographer, artist, and just generally a “creative-type.” I’m an entrepreneur based in Salt Lake City, Utah. I’m very passionate about the creative process, design, and have several years experience in events and multimedia arts with an endless love for the visual arts. And Colombian fashion is just another way to express all of that. I’m very proud that I have overcome the challenges of moving to a new country – with a totally different culture – and being able to find the space to express myself and celebrate my culture and traditions. What makes me unique is my passion, and how I find ways to connect with people, that is what I think has helped me to stand out.
In these past six years, I have found and connected with amazing people and have been able to work and help further strengthen and celebrate the Latin community in Salt Lake City through organizations like @latinasocialclub and @utahlatinrunway.
