Today we’d like to introduce you to Audra Thompson.
Hi Audra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story began back in Ohio when I was a little girl. I grew up in an unsafe home environment, so found great refuge in Mother Nature’s arms. No matter if I was at Lake Erie collecting mother of pearl to string into necklaces or earrings, or in the woods on the back of our property collecting pods, twigs, and any unique thing I could use to make something, I found great peace in the creation process. My creative voice took many forms over the years, but I found my greatest joy in the creation of jewelry a few years ago. I started collecting and cutting rocks, which led to making cabochons and eventually setting those in hand-forged sterling silver to create one of a kind heirloom jewelry. I love creating unique custom pieces for people that truly hold a place in their hearts.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the first challenges was not having a clue how to start!! I joined a local rock club where I got some instruction on how to slab rocks and cut them into pieces I could set. I kind of maxed out the information there so just started networking and reaching out to strangers who were doing what I wanted to do. I found some “mentors” this way who shared some invaluable information with me that helped me push past the obstacles in front of me. From there the rest is history.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work primarily in Sterling silver, but try to incorporate some copper and brass into my work. It’s unique that my daughter and I cut the majority of the stones I set as it gives me the creative freedom I was looking for in this industry. I feel like this sets me apart. My little family now has a whole lapidary business from one small idea that just blossomed. One of the things I am most proud of is my willingness to never give up no matter how uphill the journey may seem. It has led me to some amazing people and opportunities.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Hard work and organization are vital to all this. There is a lot to manage. Especially now we have so many moving parts. I don’t give up easily, and feel like I thrive on hard work.
