Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Childs.
Hi Becky, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always loved playing sports, running, and being fit. I used to think of yoga as a workout and a way to get a good stretch. During my first yoga class I quickly noticed everyone was able to hold each pose with ease. How was that possible? I was so strong but I couldn’t hold a pose with stillness. I was constantly comparing my stiff body to the other students in the class and getting frustrated when I would fall out of a pose. It wasn’t until 2017 when my Dad was dying of Cancer that I attended a yoga class thinking, I was just going to get a workout in. During Savasana, I felt an overwhelming feeling of love and connection to God. I knew he felt the pain my Dad was enduring and I knew he understood the fear and sadness I was feeling when I was so afraid to lose my Dad. It had been weeks since I had been able to feel ANY emotion. I was numb… until the last few moments of that class. I left the studio in tears wondering, “What did that teacher just do to me? How did she open me up? There is more to yoga than the poses.” Shortly after that class I began my yoga journey and enrolled in my first yoga teacher training. A year after graduating I started hosting Yoga Retreats. 3 years later I started assisting in yoga teacher trainings. 4 years later I co-created a manual with a dear friend and we started SHINE Yoga School. Yoga taught me how to slow down. When I slowed down, I could hear and feel God so easily. Everything was more clear. I wanted to share that knowledge with anyone that would listen 🙂
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As I practiced at higher levels and started to get more certifications in Yoga, I started to notice no one was mentioning God anymore. They would tip toe around the nature of what He is so they wouldnt offend any of the students in class. We were encouraged to only use words like “the Divine” or “the Universe” so we respected those who had left religion. I didnt mind incorporating these words. I love flowing through several ways to describe God. Yoga believes “many paths to one truth”. I love that philosophy. I believe God wants ALL of his children to return to Him. So it makes sense we will need to change our vocabulary to be more welcoming and encompassing. But why did I have to remove God. The word that I use to talk about My Divine, My universe, My everything. Very quickly I realized I wanted to start a Yoga School that allowed His name to be used freely and openly, as well as many other names that describe His essence.
When I met my business partner, we were both teaching at a local yoga studio. I knew the minute, the idea came to mind to start a Teacher Training, I wanted her to do it with me. She is the perfect balance to my strengths and weaknesses. Where I lack, she excels, and vice versa. I truly believe our partnership was divinely prepared.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SHINE Yoga School?
After years of assisting other schools with their methodology and curriculums I yearned to create my own Yoga School that aligned with my personal vision and purpose. Specifically, one that was centered around God. That is the biggest difference between SHINE and other Yoga Schools. We promote that we believe in God and align our training around that belief.
I am so passionate about Yoga and everything it has taught me. It has helped me learn how to slow down to hear God better. It has helped me grow and embrace my spiritual senses. Yoga has truly changed my life in such powerful ways.
At SHINE we want our students to gain this same light and shine brighter each week as they progress through the training. Everyone is welcome. SHINE is a vinyasa based yoga intensive teacher training with a focus on making each pose accessible to a spectrum of body types and individual needs for health and healing. Yoga is for every BODY and EVERYBODY.
The curriculum includes an in-depth study and understanding of asana (poses), pranayama (breath), meditation, philosophy, anatomy, and mind-blowing self-inquiry. Throughout SHINE Teacher Training, students will have the opportunity to deepen their connection to Self and others, as they increase strength and ease in their own physical body. Yoga Teachers in Training (YTT) will experience greater calm in their thoughts and emotions, while connecting to their Divine Self and to God.
*We offer 200 and 300 hour Hybrid Yoga Teacher Trainings. Both online and in person. We are based in Lehi, Utah at Brick Canvas.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Linda Black – In Tune Wellness. Linda was my lead trainer. She introduced me to the beautiful world of Yoga and its philosophies. Because of her knowledge and genuine concern for my growth and success as a teacher, I have always felt her support and have appreciated her guidance along the way. She is truly a gift in my life still to this day.
Nikki Ostler- Co Owner of SHINE Yoga School and dear friend. I could not have asked for a better business partner. She makes my days brighter. She enhances our trainings by being exactly who she was born to be. She adds so much with her creative ideas and unique teaching style. We are different in so many ways but completely aligned in purpose. God is everything to us.
My Mom. She is my biggest cheerleader, even when I am learning something new. She always sees my potential. She always believes in me and encourages me to pursue my dreams. Her support and love mean the world to me. She is such a loving presence that gives me courage in my life, even as an adult.
