Meet Megan Lacy of Boise Front Trail Run

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Lacy of Boise Front Trail Run.

Hi Megan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Most of our team for the Boise Front Trail Run got started with running for exercise and fun. Personally, I started running about 20 years ago as a youth athlete. At first, I really liked running because I liked competing and I was good at it. Since competing is more fun when you’re succeeding, I kept running and trying to push my body to new limits. Over time, I started to realize that the coolest thing about running is the community and the way that working hard together to reach common goals brings you together on a deeper level. When you’re in the running community, you always are less than one or two degrees of separation from someone else, so it makes the community feel like family.

The Boise Front Trail Run has been run by the local Treasure Valley YMCA for the last 7 years. They asked our team if we wanted to take over the race for 2022 and we jumped at the opportunity. This is the first race that we are putting on as a race team and we couldn’t be more excited!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our racers will be excited to hear that our road towards the Boise Front Trail Run in August has been mostly smooth so far, which we credit to the support that the Treasure Valley YMCA provided us in the race management transition. Outside of the race, my personal journey, like most others, has had its challenges. I have spent several years doubting my relationship with running and have considered leaving the sport several times. In college, I competed on my track and cross country teams and unfortunately had two stress fractures in my back and a slipped disc that prevented me from competing my junior and senior years. When I was forced to sit on the sidelines of the sport, it made me reflect on my relationship with running and I realized that if I never ran the best time or achieved any of my lifelong goals, I still wanted to try and I still wanted to be a part of this amazing community. Being able to be part of the race team for Boise Front Trail Run has been extra special as we will be holding the race on some of the same trails that I found my love for the sport again on!

We’ve been impressed with Boise Front Trail Run, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Boise Front Trail Run is a nonprofit focused on providing fun racing opportunities to the Treasure Valley community. Our event this year is on August 6th at 8:30am at the Bogus Basin Recreation Area in Boise, ID. We have both 5 mile and 10 mile race distances. The 5 mile course has about 600 feet of elevation change throughout the course and explores beautiful forest roads with a view of several valleys. The 10 mile course is more challenging with 2,000 feet of elevation change and explores some of the same forest roads as well as some single track trails that lead up to the highest point in Boise, Shafer Butte. We are very excited that this year we are partnering with Ridge to Rivers, an organization that is responsible for taking care of over 190 miles of trails in the Boise Foothills. As our partner, all proceeds from the race will be donated to them, so that we can continue to support responsible trail use in the Boise community!
