Today we’d like to introduce you to Breona Wilson.
Hi Breona, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the age of 14, I had no plans of modeling. I had my sights set on following in the footsteps of my family and joining the Marine Corp. That all changed when I was discovered by Jana Dubois, a wonderful woman who convinced my parents I had a unique look and that I had a future in this industry. She brought them out to a photoshoot and the rest is history.
I’ve been blessed with a wide range of opportunities including television, runway shows, and photoshoots for well-known designers. In the last few years, I’ve been honored in several news features and was even featured on the cover of a magazine! And though I am grateful for all of this success, at the end of the day the largest reason I model is to challenge traditional societal beauty standards. I am 5’ 4” (and a half!), which is a height that will typically get you turned down from working most high fashion events. I am biracial, and I don an all-natural afro hairstyle. I am here to show girls that no matter your DNA, you can rock your look and be just as beautiful as the typical 6-foot-tall girls that dominate the industry. You can do anything you put your mind to — and I always put my heart, mind, and soul into modeling!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I, like many others, have struggled facing self-confidence and eating issues. It is of course common for many models in this industry to criticize themselves and how they compare to others, and agents and casting directors are not always kind. But again, I work very hard to feel good about myself regardless of how I compare with others, and I am always on the mission of breaking down stereotypes that girls have to look a certain way to feel beautiful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Apart from simply feeling creative and being myself, I love being known as the “ethnic” model here in Utah! In Utah, Black men and women comprise a staggering 1.5% of the population according to the most recent census, so I get to represent a relatively small group (of which I am a proud and loud member!) I think many photographers seek me out for this reason — I am not afraid to represent my people with pride!
