Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooklyn Jourdan.
Hi Brooklyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, my family got our pictures taken by the same photographer every year. This photographer lived in my neighborhood, and I babysat for their family pretty often! One year during our family pictures, I had expressed an interest in getting into photography. Our photographer let me try out her camera by taking a few photos of my brother and my parents. (I remember it being SO heavy)
After that, I began saving up to buy my own basic DSLR camera. I was 14 when I bought it!
From there I used every opportunity I got to take pictures and learn photography. It was a hobby all throughout high school and college. After graduating college, I decided to get more serious about it and began my own business in 2020!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m mostly self-taught, so it’s been a long road for me. There have been many times I’ve thought about quitting and shutting down my business because I thought I wasn’t good enough or because I wasn’t getting enough clients. With a business that’s also an art, it can feel defeating to put your work out and not get the response you were hoping for. However, the more time I’ve put into my work and the more I put myself out there I’ve found that when those moments of self-doubt come along, something ends up happening to renew my spirits again. Whether it’s a simple compliment from someone, meeting someone new, or doing a creative session that makes me excited about my work again, I’m constantly reminded of why I love photography.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I do mainly couples photography. I love getting know other people’s love stories and seeing all the different relationships. My favorite thing about couples’ photography is doing something a little different or more creative from the average “stand here and smile” pictures. I’ll take pictures of you in your truck, with your dogs, on an amazing hike, in your bathtub, in hot springs, wherever with whatever! If you have an idea of something you want to do that’s a little different from your regular couple’s session, I’m always down to try it!
What makes you happy?
The last few years of my life have made me focus largely on the relationships I have with my loved ones. My priorities have shifted from day-to-day tasks to the people around me. It’s those relationships that make all the difference in your life. You never know what will happen down the road so it’s important to enjoy the little moments with the people you have and to foster those relationships. Put love, kindness, and time into the people around you. This is a huge reason I love photography. I love getting know other people’s relationships and seeing the love they have for each other. Pictures carry so many memories and meaning with them and I want to be able to deliver those lasting memories to others.
