Meet Carolyn Stevens of Massage by Alpenglow & Restorative Rituals In Home Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Stevens.

Hi Carolyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My love and obsession with the healing arts and natural medicine began at an early age. My life has been blessed with many opportunities to connect with nature ~ Growing up on the beaches of Cape Cod and Bostons South Shore, escaping to hike, ski, and camp in the mountains of New England in my teenage years, relocating cross country to Seattle, WA to attend a prestigious university founded on Naturopathic Medicine where I earned a bachelor of science degree in Nutrition and Natural Health Science, and finally going on to Massage Therapy training where I was able to meld mind, body, and spirit into practice. In 2007, after taking my first high end spa job in the San Juan Islands, I had a synchronistic opportunity to move to Park City, UT for a winter season to offset the slow season in the island with plans to return the next summer. Alas, Utah captured my heart and it was evident this was to be my new home. I worked at a day spa in Park City in the winter, and offset the spring -fall season at a Moab resort spa. From the age of 17, I had always worked in the high end service industry which taught me grace and excellence in client/guest experience. In May of 2014, I created my mobile massage business, such named Alpenglow Mobile Massage, which was inspired by the beauty of the Wasatch mountains. A few years in, I was overwhelmed with client requests that were beyond my personal capabilities, thus led me to seek other therapists assistance to support the business demand. 11 years in, I am blessed to have a team of 10 amazing, all female massage therapists. We cater to local and tourist clientele in private homes, rentals, and hotels in the Salt Lake City and Park City areas

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many small business owners in resort towns, our largest challenge has been seasonality. Nearly 45% of our annual revenue is earned within a very small window, and because over 90% of our mobile massage clients are in Park City, our business depends heavily on snowfall and the influx of skiers, corporate retreats, and recreational visitors. When the mountains thrive, we thrive. When they don’t, we feel it immediately.

Despite that, we’ve been fortunate to experience steady, organic growth. With minimal marketing, our reputation has spread simply because our clients are our greatest advocates. The pandemic—surprisingly—was a turning point for us. Once we were allowed to reopen, mobile services suddenly made perfect sense for people who wanted safety, comfort, and a feeling of “normal” again. It was a challenging time, but it also highlighted the value of in-home wellness, and our business grew more during that period than at any other time.

Another ongoing challenge has been staffing in a seasonal market. It can be difficult to find therapists willing to navigate the slower months in exchange for the intense busy seasons that return in summer and fall. I’m incredibly proud, though, that we offer the highest commission rate in the state, allowing our therapists to earn a stronger seasonal income than they typically would at a full-time spa or fixed-location job. It has helped create loyalty, stability, and a team that feels truly valued—even when the rhythm of the town slows down.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a mobile, luxury wellness practice rooted in the idea that healing feels different when it happens in the comfort of home. We bring massage therapy, swedish/deep tissue/sports therapy, Myofascial release techniques, lymphatic drainage massage, and other integrative spa & wellness services directly to our clients—offering deeply restorative care without the stress of travel or the bustle of a spa environment.

Our newest services ~ We offer lymphatic drainage, including post-operative care, detoxification support, scar and pain therapy, and gentle nervous-system–focused treatments. Our approach is unique because it blends advanced therapeutic modalities—such as Dolphin MPS (micro-current point stimulation or electro-acupuncture) for scar and pain therapy —with a grounding, ritual-centered experience. We’re known for combining clinical skill with intuitive, deeply nurturing work that supports whole-body wellness.

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to personalized, in-home care. Every session is designed to meet the client exactly where they are—physically, emotionally, and energetically. We take time to understand their needs, their health history, and their goals, offering not only hands-on work but also education, home-care guidance, and integrative support rooted in functional medicine principles.

I’m most proud of our brand’s authenticity. Everything we offer—whether massage, lymphatic therapy, craniosacral work, or our seasonal wellness rituals—is intentionally crafted. We follow what genuinely helps people feel better, recover faster, and live more connected to their bodies. Our growth has come organically through reputation, care, and the trust we build one client at a time.

For readers who may be new to mobile wellness, I want them to know this: you don’t have to step into a spa to receive high-level therapeutic care. We bring evidence-based treatments, restorative rituals, and a calming, grounded presence right to your door. Whether you are recovering from surgery, seeking lymphatic detoxification, wanting to improve your nervous system health, or simply needing deep rejuvenation, our services meet you in the comfort and sacredness of your own space.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Find your niche! Do what truly brings you joy in providing your unique offering and service to others. Burnout is a real deal in this field. Do what you love and you won’t have a job, you’ll have a lasting career.

Massage therapy schools don’t do a great job at business training, so if you are wanting to be an independent business owner, I would suggest finding a place that inspires you to grow independently AND provides you with an opportunity to gain insight into how they became successful. There are also some really great business coaches that specifically work with LMT’s to assist you in building a great business. High investment, great reward!
