Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Wilson.
Hi Chloe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my first Etsy shop when I was 15 years old. My dad is a small business owner and recognized the same creative, entrepreneurial spark in me. He encouraged me to sell my creations online. I’ve been sewing since I was 7 years old, starting with Barbie clothes and working my way up to formal gowns.
I’ve sold quite a few types of products throughout the years, mostly in the realm of women’s accessories. I went to college for welding in 2017 and graduated with my Welding Technology degree in 2019, and my shop had to go on the back burner because of the demands of school. I started my business back up during Covid and expanded into selling in stores and malls across the state.
I now weld professionally full time, running my business on the side. I have thousands of customers across the world and have built so many amazing business relationships. Running a business has allowed me to tap into my creativity in new and challenging ways, make beautiful things, and meet so many talented small business owners in Utah and across the nation.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The two biggest struggles that I’ve run into are lack of knowledge and lack of time. Small business owners have to be jacks of all trades, specializing in everything from product development to photography to marketing.
I’ve had to learn so many different skills in order to effectively run my business, which has taken years of hard work and mistakes. I’m glad that I got an early start though because I’ve learned a lot of the business lessons already that many people my age are just starting to figure out.
I have also worked and/or gone to school full-time during the entire life of my business, so time management and prioritizing have been difficult as well.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create handmade fabric hair accessories for all ages and sell curated plastic and resin hair clips as well. I’m known for accessible, stylish accessories that can be worn anytime, anywhere.
A big priority of mine is to create sustainable products that can be worn during any time of the year, and for years to come. I’m most proud of how far I’ve taken my business considering how young I am (23).
What sets me apart from others is the scope of my creations and experience. I weld professionally full-time, but also alter wedding dresses, and everything in between.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The importance of trying new things, and not being afraid to fail. Some of my biggest business successes were things that I was unsure about at first, but just wanted to try out.
The quickest way to learn and grow is to get outside of your comfort zone and try new things.
