Today we’d like to introduce you to Corbin Thornton.
Hi Corbin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am originally from Lehi, Utah but went up to Canada to work with my Brother in law in construction. I started off as a concrete finisher in Kelowna, British Columbia working on commercial projects, government projects, and high-rise apartment buildings. Eventually, I joined the management of my Brother in laws company and help grow the business. I started a new residential concrete business and got to do work for multi-million dollar homes and started learning all other areas of construction. After a while, I got homesick and moved back to Utah, where I am from. Here I immediately started taking on concrete projects and continued my learning of construction until I acquired my general contractor’s license so I could follow my passion which is building custom homes. My wife loves to design and so she began helping me as well. Together we strive to build incredible unique homes with attention to detail. We found that people share in that desire and have had great success ever since.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Some of the struggles were in the beginning, we were a smaller company and could get a lot of funding so I had to do a lot of the work on our spec homes myself. This forced me to learn a lot about things I didn’t know how to do. Also, sometimes subcontractors wouldn’t show up, causing delays or doing sloppy work, and then they wouldn’t come back to fix it so I would need to remedy the situation. Then there were unplanned expenses causing the project to go over budget. So early on, I learned a lot about holding people accountable, creating checklists to follow, and planning extra in my budget for items that could arise.
