Today we’d like to introduce you to David Sol
Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello! I’m David Soltero, and I’m a DJ going by David Sol. I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and my journey with music has been a lifelong one.
Music and storytelling have been a part of me for some time now. Some of my earliest memories are tied to sound—flipping through CDs, listening to my Walkman, loading songs onto my second-gen iPod Shuffle, and recording songs from the radio through my MP3 player. Music has managed to be with me consistently no matter what. But beyond individual songs, I was drawn to the way music could tell a story.
Growing up, I spent quite some time alone, and during those quiet moments, music and movies became the world I see. They weren’t hobbies—they were an escape for me, a way to process emotions I didn’t always understand at the time. Movie soundtracks, in particular, fascinated me. The way certain notes in a song could evoke a feeling, how a single melody could shift the tone of an entire movie scene—that kind of storytelling through music left a mark on me.
Of course, like music, Life has its highs and lows. My parents divorced when I was young, and while I spent time with my father for a while, those visits eventually faded. For some time, I was raised solely by my mom, a strong woman who taught me a lot about being a good person. Around the age of 9, I met my stepdad, who, to me, is simply my Dad. Both shaped who I am, and for that, I will always be grateful.
I’ve also spent a lot of time alone in my head and in all that time, I developed an admiration for a specific composer, Hans Zimmer. His compositions weren’t just background noise in a movie; they were the story. I remember as a little kid, I’d spend hours daydreaming, creating entire movie scenes in my head to the Pirates of the Caribbean score, or getting through difficult times while listening to the Gladiator soundtrack.
The idea that music could make you feel something so deeply within or open up that creativity to tell a story stuck with me and shaped how I approach music today. A DJ/Producer that dramatically shifted my interest towards progressive house music was “Cristoph”. I can say for a fact that if I had not found his music, I would not be as inspired as I am today. He brings such a strong emotional connection to his sets and music—it really set the tone for me.
The one person who has shared this same passion of music with me since the very beginning—is my best friend of 20+ years, Brian. I consider him a brother. I could talk with him about music like no one else, we’ve spent countless hours discovering new songs to share back and forth, getting lost in conversations about what makes music so powerful. We both grew up loving Skrillex, Deadmau5, Excision, etc. I truly owe a lot to him—not just for the memories we’ve made but for being there to share this journey with me.
By far, someone who has had the largest impact on me, is my wife. The love of my life, who helped me realize that we only get one life—and it’s one worth living. Without her, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, and I certainly wouldn’t have had the courage to chase my dreams. She has always encouraged me to pursue what brings me happiness, and that mindset is what allowed David Sol to exist.
I’ve slowly been collecting what I use in terms of a computer, speakers, DJ Controller, headphones, and a Midi Keyboard for production. Learning how to create a brand and make sure it’s something that represents me. I’m pushing myself to keep learning every day and simply giving all of this my best shot. Navigating an ever-changing world but for the first time in my life, I feel like I have found my purpose.
A culmination built up over time—my love for music, my love for telling a story, a keen fascination for the universe—and the amazing support from everyone came together to create David Sol. When I mix, I want people to experience more than just a beat. I want them to feel something in their soul, to get lost in a story, to connect with something beyond themselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth Road? Not at all—but I think that’s what makes the journey meaningful. Pursuing something creative, especially something as personal as music, comes with its ups and downs.
One of the biggest struggles for me has been adjusting to the fact that I’m doing this not completely but largely on my own. I grew up always pressured to be the “Golden Child,” putting my family first, but as I started carving my own path, I realized I had to make choices that truly made me happy. That hasn’t always been easy. There are moments where I feel the shock of stepping into this new phase of my life without certain support systems I once had. But at the same time, I’ve also learned how important it is to trust myself, to embrace the unknown, and to surround myself with people who genuinely encourage me to grow.
Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t change any of it. Every setback and struggle has really only brought me closer to who I am today. A win, big or small—feels even more rewarding and I cherish each one.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a DJ and storyteller through music, specializing in progressive house. My sets are crafted with intention—clean mixes, long transitions, heavy beats, and melodic vocals that guide the listener on an emotional journey. I don’t just play tracks; I love to curate an experience that feels exclusive and deeply immersive. I’ll spend a lot of late nights making sure I can find the right song to fit the story.
What sets me apart is my approach to music. I see DJing as more than just entertainment or fame and glory, it’s never been about that for me—it’s always been about the music. The energy, emotion, and storytelling that music can provide. My love for movies, movie soundtracks, and especially composers like Hans Zimmer has influenced the way I build my sets, shaping them like a cinematic journey where every song plays a role in the greater story. I want people to feel something beyond the dancing—I want the music to resonate with them as it has with me.
Recently, my love and interest for the scientific understanding of our shared universe has grown immensely. Reading about how complex and vast our universe is. It made me see music differently—how it’s not just sound but Energy. Vibrations. Atoms. I loved the idea of bringing those themes into my branding, mixes and storytelling. “Crafting the Soundtrack to our Universe”
I’m proud of the fact that I’ve stayed true to my sound. It’s easy to chase trends, but I’ve built my style around what genuinely moves me and what truly connects with me. It’s a sound that you really don’t find here in the valley. Of course, getting booked for my first show this upcoming April at Plumhouse was a huge milestone. But more than anything, I’m proud that I’ve begun turning my passion into something real—something people can experience and connect with. It is such an honor, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I’m still learning so much every day, and in many ways, I feel like I’m just getting started myself. But if there’s one piece of advice I can give, it’s this: we only get one life—at least as far as we know—so make sure you’re having fun. Follow what makes you happy and take the time to figure out what that is. Don’t worry about playing what’s popular; explore every sound, every style. You never know which one will resonate with you the most. Whether it’s deep, melodic, heavy, or dark, there’s a whole universe of music out there. Your style should reflect what you connect with on a deeper level. The rest will take care of itself.
One of the biggest things I wish I had known before starting out was to trust myself more. In the beginning, I second-guessed my track selection, my transitions, and whether I was “good enough” to put myself out there. But DJing, like any art, is personal—there’s no single right way to do it. The more I trusted my instincts and played what connects with me the most, the better my sets became. Confidence takes time, and I’m still one of my hardest critics, but I’ve learned that if you believe in your sound and your vision, others will too
