Today we’d like to introduce you to Douglas Brummett.
Hi Douglas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
This all started by just making a few small Christmas ornaments. My wife was working part-time as a teachers’ aid for the special needs students. I made some small ornaments with the kids’ names on them. After that, I made a couple of clocks for gifts for friends for different occasions. People started telling me that I should be selling my projects and quit giving them away.
So, my wife and I decided to do a local craft fair at Christmas. It was fun, so we started doing more craft fairs and started adding more items.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been an interesting, but somewhat rocky, path so far. I’ve had the opportunity to tackle a diverse range of projects that were quite demanding, which involved learning a lot of new techniques. Many of the designs for those projects come from my mind, but I’ve also bought some.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
During the day, I work full time as a supervisor for a metal recycling company. In the evenings and on weekends, I work at my woodworking. We make custom wood items. I have also added custom tumblers and other items.
I also like to do projects that are patriotic. One of the items I am most proud of is the Veterans ornament that my company makes. These ornaments have a flag on them and the word “Veteran” in front of it. On the side of the ornaments we have laser engraved the words “Loyal,” “Honest,” and “Trustworthy.” We give these ornaments to Veterans at craft fairs. It can be very emotional sometimes when you hand a Veteran an ornament and say thank you. Veterans have come back to tell us that they hang their ornaments at home with their special service awards. They say that these ornaments mean a lot to them.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like that we live in a rural farming/ranching community, but this has created some issues. For example, our customer base is smaller compared to a larger city.
