Meet Edgar Cortez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Cortez.

Hi Edgar, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For the longest time, I worked a labor job that I hated. I hated waking up and knowing I had to go to work the next morning. After being with them for years I asked for a raise and they told me no.

Yes, I was mad, yes, I was annoyed but I knew it was time for a change. I originally thought I was going to be a Shoetuber ( someone who does videos about shoes on YouTube) but my path ended up changing.

I bought a DSLR camera right after getting denied a raise and started to learn how to use it. Eventually, I needed to learn how to take photos with it. So I learned the art of photography from practice and YouTube videos.

From there, I had people ask me to take photos of them or their families, even making ads for companies. I went years without charging people because I always thought I wasn’t good enough or no one would pay me. Eventually, I made the leap to charging people and I was fully booked. Good friends Troy and Brandee pushed me to get my own office and studio. Telling me that I had to become “legit” in order to go further in the industry.

From there, I made LLC and got an office/studio. I was so nervous about getting my first location because I still had imposter syndrome but I still went ahead. I talk a lot and have very good conversations with business owners and entrepreneurs, so why not record it and start a podcast.

That’s where Mezcla Of Moguls was born. After two years we have close to 130k listens and growing. SkarxFace Visuals also grew and had to upgrade studios. I went from having a 200 sq ft office/studio to getting a 1500 sq ft studio.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road.

Having your own business is a 24/7 job and you can’t just clock out. After I signed my lease for the first location I instantly outgrew it but there was nothing I could do but just wait out the lease.

With the company and podcast, it’s constant long days and late nights and all sorts of stress, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to consider myself a content creator or artist. Most people see someone with a camera or camera equipment and think they just “take pictures”. There is more to the art of photography, we don’t just take pictures. Photography is trying to capture your special moment and or create that vision you see in your head.

I like to think people know me for my constant hustle and always moving. One thing I’m most proud of is I do not care what you think of me, or what you think of my work. I’m not here to try to please anyone but just to create beautiful content. What sets me apart from everyone else?

I’m always learning, whether it be the trade I’m in or just learning new things. I try to read as many books as I can in a year. Last year I was able to read 62 books, I was shy of my goal which was 100. I’m a sponge and like to absorb all the information and love to learn new techniques.

What does success mean to you?
Success. How does one define this word?

It means so many things to so many different people. Success to me means you find something you love to do and are able to make a living off it. I love content creation and I get paid for it.

Now, success is growing my media company into one of the biggest in the world.
