Meet Emily Powell of EP Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Powell.

Hi Emily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Emily Powell. I’m a studio salon owner, wife, and mama. Since I was little, I have always loved the beauty industry. As I got older, I knew I wanted to do something in the beauty industry, but I wasn’t quite sure what.

I enrolled in cosmetology school and within two weeks I had dyed my hair blue! For the first time in my life, my hair reflected who I felt I was and my hair was showing off my personality. My mental health felt a little bit lighter, and I felt a lot more confident.

I quickly realized how much of an impact good hair was having on my own life, and as I dove deep into doing hair, I realized how much of an impact good hair had on others’ lives as well. Daily I saw people come into the salon feeling self-conscious and leave completely glowing from excitement-because we were able to help them feel like themselves when they looked in the mirror.

There was a problem, however. I myself am super busy and there is no way I would be able to go to the salon every 6-8 weeks to refresh my color! Not only did I have no time for that, but that money also adds up quickly! I knew I needed to make it a little bit easier on myself and others to have Pinterest-worthy hair but without all of the maintenance.

I dove into classes and learning and creating techniques to make gorgeous hair low-maintenance. Now, most of my clients only see me 2-3 times a year, and when they do their color still looks amazing from the last time I saw them! It has become my mission to love and accept everyone as they were, regardless of sexual orientation, race, or background, and to help them create the hair of their dreams and look the way they wanted to feel from day one to the next time they were able to come back in.

I’ve been creating effortless, low-maintenance hair for busy people since 2015, and I absolutely adore what I do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In cosmetology school, we’re taught the basics of the basics. We take our tests, get our license and most of us think that we’re good! We can do everything! I got into my first salon and very quickly realized that that was not the case AT ALL.

I knew that if I wanted to have a future doing hair, I needed to dive fully into education and teach myself not only how to do good hair, but how to run a successful business. I have spent over 10,000 hours in my career working on education alone so that I can serve my guests in the best way possible.

We’ve been impressed with EP Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
EP Studio is a salon creating effortless, low-maintenance hair for busy people. I believe fully that you can have Pinterest-worthy hair without having to go to the salon every eight weeks.

Through innovative color techniques, I’ve created the perfect balance between having gorgeous hair and having a busy, full and beautiful life. Most of my clients come to see me 2-3 times a year max, and their hair still looks amazing! I make sure my clients can sit back, relax, enjoy a personalized guest experience and feel better when they leave than when they walked in the door.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be afraid to seek out digital education! Especially today where there aren’t a ton of big group classes or events, it’s become more important than ever to find education online. I’m a member of the Thrivers Society created by Britt Seva.

She has been a huge business mentor for me and her program is all online. Find someone that fits well with your personality and that has the same or similar values as you do, and don’t be afraid to test new things and people out.
