Meet Erica Wright of Sideline Cheer Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Wright

Hi Erica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
A few years ago, I found myself watching a local youth football game, noticing a glaring gap in the recreation sports world. There was so much focus on the athletes on the field, but I couldn’t help but think about the kids on the sidelines—the cheerleaders, who were often overlooked. At the time, we had just six young athletes standing there, eager but lacking the support, structure, and confidence they deserved.

I saw a real opportunity to change that. So, I decided to start a youth cheerleading group—one that wasn’t just about performing cheers but about building community, confidence, and leadership. I wanted to create a place where young athletes could feel valued, where they could grow not only in their cheerleading skills but in their self-esteem and ability to lead others.

The group started small, just six cheerleaders, but the impact was immediate. As we trained together, I saw their confidence blossom. They weren’t just cheering for the football players; they were cheering for each other, pushing one another to be better, both as athletes and as individuals. That sense of community and support was exactly what I felt was missing in so many recreational sports programs.

I’ve watched those first six athletes grow into 76 strong, confident leaders in our community, and it’s been the most rewarding experience to know that I’ve been a part of something bigger than just a sport. It’s about giving youth a platform to grow, to learn, and to realize their potential.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a youth cheer program wasn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was finding a place to practice. At first, we had no dedicated space, so we had to get creative—relying on local parks, gymnasiums, and even unused corners of community centers. Each location came with its own set of obstacles, from weather conditions to lack of proper equipment, and it was tough to establish consistency. But the kids were determined, and that kept us going.

Another challenge was gaining the support of the football organizers. Since cheerleading had always been an afterthought for many, there was a bit of resistance in the beginning. Convincing them that cheerleading was just as important in building team spirit and community involvement took time. I had to show them that cheerleaders weren’t just sideline supporters—they were integral to the game day experience and the overall energy of the program. Slowly, through persistence and passion, I was able to earn their trust and cooperation, and eventually, they saw the value in having a strong, supportive cheerleading program alongside the football teams.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the ham—the one providing comic relief and making everyone laugh at family gatherings or with friends. I loved bringing joy to others and making sure no one ever felt left out. In high school and college, I was focused on track, dedicating myself to running and competing, but cheerleading was never part of the picture. Despite that, I always found myself encouraging others to join in, whether it was on the track or in other activities, and helping people feel like they belonged. That sense of inclusion and community became a core part of who I am, and it naturally carried over into my work with youth cheerleading, where I strive to create that same welcoming environment for every athlete.
