Today we’d like to introduce you to Everett Lavell Spencer.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Everett Lavell Spencer. I am an African American male born in Watts California 1960. The nucleus of the American Civil Rights movement and Watts Riots of 1965. The American Civil Rights Movements continues to affect my daily life, my surroundings, my life choice’s and my emotional struggles that come from Discrimination and Racism towards African Americans. More so now that ever!
As a child I witnessed the effects of social unrest caused by the Watts Riots. This resulted in the loss of lives and clear destruction of my schools, churches, shopping malls, and playgrounds. My family and I were exposed to our neighborhood being infiltrated by police officers, and the rebellion of the BLACK Citizens who were constantly being discriminated against. At age 32, I experienced the Los Angeles Riots that happened as a response to the acquittal of 5 WHITE police officers who used excessive force and police brutality against Rodney King, an unarmed BLACK MAN. All of which was captured on videotape. There was complete chaos from April thru May of 1992. My surrounding neighborhoods were burned to the ground.
My life’s journey from childhood to adulthood has its challenges even today. But I am still blessed by a higher power. God provides everyone gifts; you just have to find out what there are! My gifts lead to my Professional careers as an ACTOR, MUSICIAN, MODEL, POET, ENTERTAINMENT MANAGER, and INVESTOR.
I am currently an employee of the Largest Private Employer in the state of Utah, Intermountain Health. My degree from Pepperdine University helped me to establish a career in Finance and Accounting but I never set out to be a part of Intermountain Health history. Yet 15 years ago, Intermountain Health provided me with my first experience in Healthcare based finance and I stayed. Now, I am the longest serving African American caregiver in Corporate Accounting and Finance.at the largest private employer in Utah. Because over the years, I have been treated fairly.
My heroes are my two beloved parents Ben and Elizebeth Spencer who instilled in me a strong work ethic in me as a child. My work ethic and even his career choice as an accountant definitely is because of my parent’s influence.
Outside of traditional work hours, I choose to give back to the community through my love of art. I am a stage Actor. Roles like (Booker T. Washington in Ragtime) also, Lt. Col Allen Allensworth (leader of the Buffalo Soldiers, the first African American Lt. Col in the US ARMY, Leader of the US Colored Troops) I have been involved with Local non-profit organization such as Project Success Coalition, Beloved Community, and currently a Honorary member of the Nubian Storytellers of Utah Leadership, 365 Poetry and National organizations, National Juneteenth Directors and Planners and Story Crossroads as a performing, on May 6th in Murray UT.
