Meet Floyd Roit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Floyd Roith.

Hi Floyd, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, I started tattooing when I got out of the US Navy, my father and the mother of my oldest daughter pushed me into it. I was an artist my whole life I never thought I was any good at it, so when she saw my artwork and said it was good, and was going to buy me a tattoo kit I said: “don’t do that!”. Turns out, after watching the apprenticeship DVD and a few days held up in my bedroom, I was actually pretty good! After tattooing on my friends for six months on the side while also working at the local Walmart. While my father the whole time let me do tattoos and live at his house, big shout out for the support! my first shading tattoo was noticed by a local tattoo shop and I was offered a tattoo apprenticeship. I started tattooing in Cheyenne, Wyoming at Bad Ass Tattoo ten years ago. I was there for over three years. After my time at Bad Ass Tattoo, I moved back to Nevada I bounced around moving often across northern Nevada until I had my second daughter, at that time I became a stay at home father for a few years, while also working laboring jobs on the side. After my daughter was to a proper age, I got back into the tattoo industry acquiring a job at a shop in San Antonio Texas. I worked there for a short time and then was offered a job here in Utah at Warhawk Tattoo. The offer was a great opportunity for me to not only work near my home but also work alongside a great artist, so I took the job I still reside and work at Warhawk Tattoo in Layton Utah for two years and running now, couldn’t imagine a better spot.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
At first, I blew up in my career but it has not been easy! Back when I started tattooing, knowledge in the tattoo world was scarce people were not willing to just handed out! It was a very hard job to get into and tattoo artists back then were not willing to give up the tricks of the trade so easy, also there were no YouTube videos on how to tattoo back when I started. You really had to prove your worth before acquiring someone who will actually let you work at the shop as an apprentice even during your apprenticeship working for free not tattooing and having to be there full-time was a struggle. That’s where support from my mother of my oldest daughter and my father really came into play. After going back to Nevada and not having a name for myself in that area proving your worth was definitely hard. Then we had my youngest daughter living in a small town in Nevada and not being able to acquire the funds that we needed to take care of our child and ourselves I had to be a stay at home father to take care of my child for a few years but I’m so blessed to be back in the industry! So today, I have acquired quite a name for myself and the shop I work at is a very well-known shop in the area now and I’m proud of that and blessed to be a part of it!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a tattoo artist here in Layton, Utah at the shop Warhawk tattoo. I specialize in quality tattoos as do my coworkers, I’m down for taking my time on my tattoos and giving out a quality tattoo I’m really proud of the work I do and the work that comes out of the shop that I’m at! I’m most proud of being a part of a shop that cannot pride themselves on the work that they do and create 100% custom tattoos every day.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
