Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Rawlings
Hi Garrett, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Honestly, I had the creative itch long before picking up a camera. In high school, I started a clothing brand based on the style and love I had for the culture of skateboarding. I designed graphics for tees, hats, and really anything I was passionate about putting out. After I graduated, I did the usual and got into construction, but I knew I was missing something over the course of those two years. Long story short, I started creating videos with my iPhone until I was approached about filming for an excavation company, which led to receiving a camera and drone. After that, I never really looked back. I began shooting for multiple companies in Southern Utah, as well as reaching out to brands and doing shoots for free or little pay to chase my passion for brand work. Within six months of receiving my first camera, I landed a full-time spot as the Digital Media Producer for a brand out of Northern Utah, MTN OPS. That full year with the marketing team honestly taught me more than any schooling could’ve. I knew deep down I could make this a career, but I am still extremely blessed and thankful that it all happened so quickly. Here I am today, two years into the journey so far and loving every minute of it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been smooth in the sense that it all has happened the way it was meant to. The fact that my passion became my career in such a short amount of time truly is a blessing. Of course, there have been rough patches, doubts, and struggles, but at the end of the day, it’s all been more than worth it. If I had any advice for creatives of all types, it would be to get out of your own head. We are always our own worst critic. Putting something out there that you are deeply passionate about is scary, but wondering “what if” is a whole lot scarier.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I am the lead producer for an outdoor brand (FINAL RISE). I shoot and create all things brand-related, from studio and lifestyle to branded short films. My most recent project was filming a caribou hunt in the backcountry of Alaska. I would say my product lifestyle imagery put me on the radar when starting out, but I have now shifted to really enjoying short films and longer-form content. I tend to go back and forth between photography and filmmaking, as do a lot of creatives in this space, I believe. Truthfully, I think it’s too early on to give a direct answer to, “What are you known for?” Down the road, I would love to be known for my authentic look and feel across the board, whether in films or stills.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Like I mentioned in the beginning, I have always had the creative eye and the itch to create. Board sports growing up were my creative outlet in a way. The overall culture of those sports has influenced me as a creative more than I’ve even truly realized. My passion for my career today is simply a reflection of who I’ve always been.
