Today we’d like to introduce you to Gia Rushton.
Hi Gia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first went to school and majored in Interior Design at FIDM in LA. After graduation, I worked in event design and production for (2) years. However, I knew events weren’t my forever career so I went back to school for a bachelors in Interior Design. From there, I fell into kitchen and bath design where I specialized for a decade with much of my clientele being high-end custom homes. Once I went out on my own, I expanded my services to offer full-service design and then at the end of 2024 I attained my NCIDQ which allowed me to expand my design services to onboard commercial clients!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have always looked at each job or employer as a stepping stone or learning experience. Prior to being independent, each job allowed me to learn different skills. Since opening my own firm it has very much been the same mindset. Not every day or situation has been easy, but it’s allowed me to learn and grow not only as a designer but as a business owner. For me the top priorities when working with clients is communicate clear expectations as well as be kind and act with integrity.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
OC&D Design Studio® is a full-service design firm located in South Jordan, UT and we cater to both residential and commercial clients located along the Wasatch Front. So what makes us different? We are certified nationally and licensed at the state level. Currently, I hold my NCIDQ, SCCID, and am a LEED Green Associate.
Interior design is about so much more than aesthetics; interior design should focus on health, safety, and well-fare of the end user. For our specific design process, we start by considering Universal Design as well as sustainable and healthy materials. We are passionate about the spaces we design being inclusive of all ability levels as well as being healthy since humans spend approximately 90% of our time indoors. Our design process also works in tandem with the contractor or builder so you receive accurate pricing. This allows us to stay in your budget!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see a shift in consumers caring about healthy interiors. Whether that’s LEED, WELL, passive homes, or any of the other rating systems. I love seeing this become more mainstream and something clients are caring about!
