Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Konold.
Hi Haley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I first dove into the videography world about four years ago. Some silly thrown-together videos by kids that lived up north from me had piqued my interest, and I decided I would start collecting clips to make my own year recap video. The flood of positive feedback from friends, family, and strangers on that initial Instagram post led to much of my free time is spent producing vacation videos, annual year recap videos, and snowboarding ‘shredits’. Junior year of high school rolled around and I notified the high school yearbook advisor that if he ever became interested in incorporating videography into the program, I was his person. He reached out immediately. Through that encounter I instigated the first ever videography program at Provo High School, serving as head videographer my senior year while simultaneously launching Haley K Films through my first wedding gig. I quickly went on to produce 21 more wedding videos and work with D1 athletes as a BYU athletics social content creator. As I head into my junior year at BYU, I plan on studying communications and focusing my business on wedding videography.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Funny enough, I kicked off my videography career on a knee scooter. I played soccer throughout high school, and four months after breaking my elbow in a snowboarding accident, I broke and dislocated my ankle rollerskating. The interesting thing is that I consider that ankle injury the miracle that led me into my now-career. During what would have been my senior soccer season, I began filming the different fall sports while scootin’ around on that knee scooter. I don’t think I would be where I am now without that injury, because the experience I gained filming that fall season was the most pivotal of all my experience up until that point.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My zest for living life and capturing rich moments in an authentic way is my driving force and the reason I love what I do. I believe what sets my business apart is the emphasis I put on honoring the true moment as-is, without diluting it too much in post-production. My business is aimed towards weddings, yet I equally love a good sports edit and gained a lot working as a videographer for BYU Athletics. One of those is rapid turnaround time, and I will admit I pride myself in delivering the wedding video before the photos get there, haha. Additionally, I will go so far as to say that the song is the most important part of an edited video, so I will always ask for and use the song(s) my clients pick. The only thing better than the beautiful moments in a video is watching them unfold to a song with meaning.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I graduate in less than two years, and I plan on getting to a point where sports/wedding videography is my only job! I have done school and video simultaneously for so long that I can’t wait to see how my business will grow given that new freedom. I would love to travel more; I am filming my first California wedding in a week from now and can see more of that in my future. I also anticipate growth in my social media following as I navigate the infamous Instagram algorithm.
