Meet Heidi McNulty of Empower Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi McNulty.

Heidi McNulty

Hi Heidi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’ll start when I was a 19-year-old single mom. I started a career in staffing and worked my way up the corporate ladder until 2012 when my husband and I started investing in real estate on the side. We bought four rentals over the next two years. Then in 2014, I tried a flip and lost 52,000. In 2015, I started my own staffing company. In 2017, my husband attempted suicide and ended up hospitalized and medically discharged from the military with 90% disability for PTSD.

In 2020, he was hospitalized again. I continued to grow our real estate portfolio and run my staffing company. I was flipping 12-20 homes per year and grew our real estate portfolio to 86 units. I started writing a book teaching basic financial literacy. In April 2022, I sold my staffing company and decided to retire. 3 months later my husband of 15.5 years killed himself in front of me and our 3 boys.

I’ve adjusted my book to include mental health and the value of time that often gets lost in the pursuit of wealth. I learned the hard way that money can always be made, but you never get that time back. In the last 16 months since my husband passed, I have navigated a market change, become an entrepreneur of several new companies/projects, am a full-time mom, and recently got remarried. Our life is very calm and peaceful these days regardless of how many obstacles we run into as entrepreneurs.

My husband and I opened a new facility focused on youth suicide prevention, mental health awareness, addiction recovery, and family services. My book launches in February 2024. My husband’s book Warrior in the Garden launched in September and is a #1 international best seller. I’m developing an app focusing on documenting our life’s story.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. I lost a lot on my first flip. When we opened my staffing company we were sued on day 2 with forged non-compete agreements.

We ended up winning in court, but it was really scary to think that was even possible to get sued when you did everything by the book. My husband’s several suicide attempts and ultimately his death was extremely hard.

His PTSD was very hard to live with and we just couldn’t make him do the work to get better.

As you know, we’re big fans of Empower Fitness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I own several businesses, but the one that I am most passionate about is Empower Fitness. Empower Fitness is a facility we recently started in West Jordan.

It provides family services, life coaching, fitness classes, financial education, and counseling for families and youth struggling with suicide, addiction, anxiety, depression and so much more. It is a central location for all things mental health.

How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure I believe in luck. I believe God has a plan and things happen for us to teach us valuable life lessons so we can become who we are meant to be.
