Meet Isabelle White of ReSelf Massage Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabelle White.

Hi Isabelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Long story short, I always saw myself being in healthcare growing up. I originally wanted to be a doctor, then changed to nursing. I was a CNA for 5 years, and was going to Weber State to finish my prerequisites for nursing school, when I decided to change paths and go to massage school. I’ll be honest, I had never had a massage before enrolling in school. I had a gut feeling that I needed to be there. I even thought I was crazy on the day of my orientation. I thought, “what the heck am I doing here??” Then I saw a teacher demonstrate a full session of massage therapy. It was truly beautiful. The care and practice it takes to be good at this craft is very admirable. I fell in love with massage, and since that day, it’s all I’ve wanted to learn about.

While in massage school, I was in an intro course for Structural Bodywork. Fun fact, my first structural teacher quit with no notice shortly after our first day of the 10-week course. I was so lucky to have Jason Prince step in and teach our small class for the rest of the course. I was ENAMORED with Structural Integration!!

After I graduated massage school, I decided to start my business a month after I was officially licensed. I worked 4 jobs to make ends meet and took continuing education courses, while also building my small business. It was hard but I’m so grateful I did it.

After some twists and turns, I’m now located in Ogden, Utah, working for myself full time, and loving every, single, second. I’m beyond grateful and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s been ups and downs for sure!! I struggled quitting nursing, as my friends and family thought I was silly for taking up massage therapy instead. It was worth it, though. Then I struggled with working a job that I wasn’t passionate about, but it paid the bills while I learned about my vocation. After school, I didn’t make the money that I thought I would at all! I was constantly working and learning until I could figure out a better situation for myself. Although it was bumpy, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about ReSelf Massage Therapy?
I came up with the name “ReSelf” when I wanted to be an affiliate marketer and advocate for mental health therapy services. I’m glad I didn’t, because it fits my massage therapy brand much better. ReSelf is basically an all-encompassing name to represent restarting, rejuvenating, reviving, renewing, all of the re- words! My practice is there to hold space for those who need to “re”start, literally or figuratively. I specialize in Structural Integration, which is a modality that focuses on fascial health in relation to gravity. We want to work with gravity, rather than against it, and in order to do that, we must get to the root of our old compensation patterns to make room for the new, healthy fascial organization. I don’t offer a flowy, relaxing massage. My bodywork is uncomfortable, yet affective. In order for the proprioceptors in your fascia to reorganize themselves properly, they need a little convincing to do so. Fascial bodywork has felt like the missing piece for so many people. Fascial pain is something pretty much everyone experiences, yet not a lot of people have a name for it. My job is to educate, and guide people to living a pain-free, healthy life. You only get one body, you better make sure you’re taking care of it.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Keep going. It’s so hard, but it’s the best kind of hard. People aren’t going to understand your why. That’s okay. They don’t need to, as long as you know who and what your efforts are for. Stay authentic, work hard, and take some time to smell the roses on the way.
