Meet Jacob Chung of Five Sushi Brothers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Chung.

Hi Jacob, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Five Sushi Brothers story began in May 2016, born from two brothers’ shared struggle with the all-too-familiar late-night munchies. Ammon Chung, the older brother, had experienced one too many nights wishing there was something better than fast food or pizza after hours. One day, inspiration struck: what if there was a late-night sushi delivery service in Provo — fresh, fast, and affordable?

Excited by the idea, Ammon shared it with his younger brother, Jacob Chung. The moment the idea left his mouth, they both knew this wasn’t a matter of if — it was a matter of when. Together, they dove into turning the dream into a reality.

Without funds for their own location, the brothers bootstrapped the business by renting out a local Mexican restaurant’s kitchen during the late-night hours after it had closed. They raised their initial startup money through a Kickstarter campaign where they held a party to promote it. At the party, they gave away free sushi to the first 400 people. Little did they know, hundreds and hundreds of college students would come to support and help them raise their goal of $5,000 in just a couple of days. They were finally able to open. From 9 PM to midnight, they hand-rolled sushi, packed orders, and delivered them personally — building a loyal following one roll at a time. At first, customers didn’t even know what to expect. But after trying the food and experiencing the vibe, word spread fast.

Since those humble beginnings, Five Sushi Brothers has evolved into one of Utah Valley’s most beloved restaurants. What sets us apart isn’t just the sushi (though we’re proud of its quality) — it’s the experience. Our guests come to hang out, enjoy fresh sushi, play Super Smash Bros. on our big screen, and feel part of a community.

From two brothers with a late-night craving to a local staple known for fun, flavor, and family — that’s the story of Five Sushi Brothers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! We experienced very difficult times that has led us to close 2 of our 3 locations. The first one was in SLC. Although the location was promising, a few months after starting, COVID hit and we had no choice but to cut our losses and try to preserve our Provo location. This led to lots of heart ache due to all of the employees we had to let go. One of them even being one of my best friends who no longer wishes to associate themselves with me. This was probably the hardest struggle, but to say it’s been a smooth road would be dishonest. I also started this business with my brother when I was a college student. I had no experience and no Idea what I was doing. In a lot of ways, we’re still figuring out where we want to be and how we can best serve our customers and employees.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Five Sushi Brothers is a fast-casual sushi restaurant located in the heart of Provo. We specialize in serving fresh, high-quality sushi rolls with speed, consistency, and personality. Our menu features creative rolls like the Dylan From Vegas, fan-favorite gyoza with our family’s house-made sauce, and other unique offerings that reflect our commitment to both flavor and fun.

What truly sets us apart is our origin story and our approach. We started as two college brothers who wanted something better than late-night pizza or fast food. From humble beginnings renting a kitchen for a few hours each night, we’ve grown into a beloved local brand with thousands of loyal guests and over 2,000 Google reviews. Our guests come for the sushi, but they stay for the welcoming atmosphere, video games they can play at our restaurant, the fast service, and the personality behind everything we do.

We’re most proud of how we’ve kept our brand grounded in our values: delivering great food with integrity, attention to detail, and a focus on community. We aim to create memorable experiences that keep guests coming back—and telling their friends. Five Sushi Brothers isn’t just about sushi. It’s about connection, consistency, and creating something that feels local, approachable, and fun.

We want readers to know that when they choose Five Sushi Brothers, they’re supporting a small, family-run business that takes pride in every roll we serve. Whether you’re dining in, grabbing takeout, or ordering delivery, we’re here to make sure it’s fast, fresh, and done right.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
At Five Sushi Brothers, we define success far beyond dollars and profit margins. For us, success means creating a place that brings people together — a restaurant where guests feel welcome, valued, and excited to return, and where team members feel safe, supported, and proud of the work they do.

We believe true success comes from the experiences we create, not just the sushi we serve. When someone chooses to spend their time with us — whether it’s a first date that turns into a lifelong relationship, a college student taking a study break, or a family sharing a meal — that’s success. When our team members feel they have a workplace where they can grow, laugh, and contribute meaningfully, that’s success.

Our goal has never been to become the biggest sushi chain or to make millions. It’s to build something authentic that positively impacts our community and provides real opportunities for our team. If we can look around and see guests smiling, employees thriving, and connections being made — we know we’re succeeding. But of course, we need to be profitable and make money in order to sustain the business and happy customers 🙂
