Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Morrise.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a child, I often took things apart to see how they worked and to then try and get them back together, much to my parent’s dismay. I was fascinated by the mechanical workings of just about everything. I knew from a pretty young age that I wanted to invent things. When I started college, mechanical engineering seemed to fit right along with that goal.
I attended and then graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from BYU-Idaho in 2008 and worked at a few aircraft design places early in my career. In 2010, I went back to school at BYU and earned a master’s degree again in mechanical engineering where I worked in a group studying the design of products to aid in poverty alleviation. From there, I began working mostly in the design of consumer products, with some medical and industrial products mixed in.
I was able to work on a couple of well-known products including the mechanical design of the first version of the Ring doorbell. In 2018, I started my current company Morrise Products about the same time we learned that my wife was expecting our 10th child, all within the previous 10 years. We procured a home equity line of credit and I started to work full time for myself in our basement office.
As the father of 10 young kids, I have done a lot of my own personal product development in the baby and child arena. I am currently selling several products that I designed on Amazon, and am working on, and hoping to license, a very small folding baby stroller, about 1/3 the folded size of the smallest currently on the market.
I also do consultation work for various clients. The products I work on vary a lot and it has been fun to work with so many people. Over the course of my career, I have been the primary mechanical designer on dozens of products that have gone to market and am excited each time I get to see a successful product design launched.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started Morrise Products at the same time my wife and I learned we were having our 10th child.
We took out a home equity line of credit and lived for the first year largely on that. When I started the company, I didn’t have many clients, so I spent a lot of time trying to network, design products of my own, and trying to learn how to market and sell. I soon learned that this wasn’t going to be sustainable, and I had a very short amount of time left before I was going to be required to give up and get a “real” job.
Fortunately, I was able to increase my consulting income and things have been going more smoothly for the last couple of years.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have had too many people help to get me to where I am to count.
From great teachers to managers, coworkers, and friends. My dad, a computer scientist, who learned many things mechanical from his own father was a significant influence in getting me interested in tools, building things, and mechanisms. From buying my first socket set at 8 years old to encourage me in my designs now, I have learned a lot from him.
My wife has also allowed me to get where I am today in many ways, not the least of which is allowing me to start a company at what was probably the worst time possible.
