Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayde Burk.
Hi Jayde, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up when I thought of a career, nails and esthetics never came to mind. Nursing was always my earliest passion, but I quickly realized I wanted to help people in other ways. While nursing was a very practical job, I found my creativity through different art forms. For as long as I could remember, dancing was a way that I could express myself and escape from reality. This caused a constant conflict between my passion and career. While in high school, I was trying to balance dance and nursing.
However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I saw how people around me were affected and the world was changing. This ultimately made me choose between careers, but I always felt lost. With all this being said, I leaned on my parents for support and advice. They were, and still are, my biggest support system. My mom saw my creative potential and knew that choosing a career was taking a toll on my mental health. This is when she sent a link to our local beauty college. I took a leap of faith and decided to apply. Without having much information about the beauty industry, I decided to give it a chance. This way I could have a way to express my creative ideas, while still helping people. It was truly the best of both worlds.
Time was passing quickly during this program, but I was enjoying every second of it. After passing my state boards three months later, I was licensed. Once I started my career, I had my fair share of ups and downs. At the time I was working out of my parent’s spare bedroom and it wasn’t ideal. I wanted to expand my knowledge more, so I enrolled in a basic esthetician program. During this time I relocated my business to my first salon. I loved the environment much more and knew that was an essential step in the right direction. Before I knew it, everything was falling into place! After graduating I found a Paul Mitchell location in Logan, Utah.
By July of 2021, I was living 4 hours away from home with a new job and school. I was able to work with many talented technicians and push my business to the next level. In Logan, I realized owning a business was challenging, especially at 19 years old. I then spent two years growing my business and obtained my master esthetician license along the way. At this time, I had a well-established clientele but wasn’t content with my location. After carefully considering many spaces, The Ruhe’ Collective drew me in immediately. It’s a positive environment for artists to grow and create the best services possible in the industry.
I relocated again in July of this year and continue to expand my client base. As of now, I’m looking forward to developing my social media platforms and networking in the valley. My journey has been nowhere near perfect, but I have felt nothing but support from my community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I’m proud to be where I am now, the road was anything but smooth. As an artist, you never fully step away from your work. From social media to finances, there are many stresses when it comes to owning a creative business. I’ve had my fair share of anxiety, and often get in my head that I’m doing everything wrong.
I’ve struggled when it comes to comparing myself to other artists, managing my emotions, and seeing clients go elsewhere. At times I beat myself up about not being able to perfect a design or concept. However, these anxieties only help motivate me to work harder.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Nail Technician and Master Esthetician. I specialize in gel overlays, extensions, hand-painted nail art, and natural nail health. I’m known for my intricate nail designs and retention. I’m most proud of the growth my business has made, in the 3 short years of being licensed.
I feel like I can see each of my client’s inspirations and can bring their ideas to life. I pull inspiration through different prints, textures, wallpapers, and of course, other artists. My clients receive one-of-a-kind designs and strong manicures. I believe this makes my services unique. The most important aspect is that my client gets to feel understood.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is my family’s annual Pork n’ Snort Reunion. Every year as a kid, my Grandma would host a reunion. She had a fake store called The Grandma Store, and all the kids would do chores or help around camp to earn Grandma Bucks. She always had the best toys and treats for us to pick out.
Whether it was a camping trip or a weekend stay in a fancy cabin, it was some of the best memories that will stick with me forever. All of my cousins would come, and there would be games with so much food. It would sometimes happen around Christmas, and it always felt so magical. One year, we all dressed up as characters from The Grinch. I don’t have siblings, so this was the time I looked forward to the most.
