Meet Jessa Munion of Rocksteady Bodyworks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessa Munion.

Hi Jessa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up global, spending parts of my childhood and teenage years in Japan and China, where I was deeply influenced by eastern approaches to health, healing, and wellness. My dad was a huge influence—he spent time in a Buddhist monastery in his twenties and always emphasized mindset, self-improvement, and the deeper work of being human. I took my first yoga class in boarding school in seventh grade and was hooked. From that point on, movement as medicine was always by my side.

I was a high school and college athlete, but also turned to practices like yoga, meditation, and personal development for mental clarity and emotional grounding. That duality—of pushing my body *and* caring for my whole self—has stayed with me.

I had a dynamic early career in business and communications, but after diving deep into yoga teacher trainings with the Baptiste Institute, where I was eventually offered a lead role in programs and operations, things began to shift. That chapter was like an experiential MBA—learning how to build community, teach powerfully, and run the back end of a values-driven business.

Eventually, I paused to attend massage therapy school—something I’d been curious about since that first yoga class at age 12. My then-boyfriend (now husband) came from a family business background, and with our shared experience, we knew we had the tools to launch our own practice. That was ten years ago, and we’ve been building Rocksteady ever since.

What started as a personal passion for movement and healing has evolved into a thriving studio rooted in deep care, science-backed practices, and a commitment to helping people move better, feel better, and live with more vitality.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Yes and no. The highs have definitely been high—and the lows have taught us just as much.

One of the more challenging aspects has been navigating the interpersonal dynamics that come with leading a close-knit team, especially in a transparent, values-driven environment where many team members are also friends. Creating a culture that encourages real communication and accountability has required consistent intention and growth.

Scaling the business has brought its own lessons. Early on, we tried hiring therapists through traditional channels, but eventually realized that building an in-house massage apprenticeship program was the best way to ensure both quality and cultural alignment.

We’ve also acquired two businesses along the way, with the original owners staying on to work with us. That brought incredible value—but also inevitable differences in vision that eventually led to parting ways.

And of course, one of the most significant challenges was navigating COVID. As a fully client-facing business offering both Pilates classes and one-on-one bodywork, we were forced to shut down for over three months. At the time, we had a toddler, no income, and no clear path forward. I’m both proud and grateful for how we pivoted and came out stronger on the other side.

We’ve been impressed with Rocksteady Bodyworks, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Rocksteady is a movement and manual therapy studio in Holladay, Utah, offering fascia-focused bodywork and Pilates-based strength and conditioning. We’re known for our integrated, science-based approach to wellness—where every therapist and teacher is deeply trained in anatomy, nervous system regulation, and biomechanics.

What sets us apart is the quality and depth of our care. The majority of our Pilates instructors are also licensed massage therapists, so our sessions aren’t just fitness—they’re corrective, intelligent, and incredibly tailored. Our bodywork is not spa massage—it’s advanced myofascial release, dry needling, cupping, and structural integration designed to restore movement and reduce pain.

We work with everyone from postpartum moms to high-performing athletes, and we love helping people move better, recover faster, and feel more at home in their bodies.

I think what I’m most proud of brand-wise is that Rocksteady has become a trusted community hub—where clients don’t just feel stronger, but feel *seen*. We’re not in the business of perfection—we’re here for progress, healing, and empowering people with better tools to support their whole system: body, mind, and fascia.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Oh my gosh, for my field of wellness I can’t get enough of Katy Bowman’s body of work, nutritious movement, Tom Meyer’s Anatomy Trains, and Ellie Herman’s Pilates manuals. Personally I love Hidden Brain and On Being.
