Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Lewis
Hi Kara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Glen Ray’s Corn Maze is a true family-run farm, built on over 150 years of agricultural heritage. Wanting her boys to grow up with the same farm life experiences she cherished, Kara Lewis returned to her family’s farm in Utah in 2017. Being closer to family and the land inspired her to create a place where others could enjoy the beauty and traditions of farm life together. Wanting to share the beauty of farm life with others while creating a sustainable future for the land, she saw an opportunity to blend agriculture with agritourism. That vision became reality when Glen Ray’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch opened, quickly growing into a beloved fall tradition.
From the very beginning, every member of the family has played a vital role. Kara’s husband, Clarence, a contractor, builds many of the farm’s attractions, including play areas and the Field of Fright haunted maze. Her father, Rex Larsen, is the backbone of the farm’s agricultural side, farming the corn and pumpkins each year to ensure a bountiful harvest. Meanwhile, her mother, Sherrie Larsen, manages concessions and organizes field trips, making sure every visitor has a memorable and educational experience.
Kara and Clarence’s boys have also grown up working every aspect of the farm, starting with small tasks like hauling and weeding pumpkins, and now taking on larger responsibilities in operations and guest experiences.
Over the years, the farm has continued to grow, offering a variety of attractions for all ages—whether it’s wandering through the corn maze, picking the perfect pumpkin, experiencing the thrills of giant slides and other attractions or testing their bravery in the Field of Fright haunted maze.
Now, eight years in, Glen Ray’s Corn Maze stands as a testament to hard work, tradition, and family. With multiple generations working together, the farm remains dedicated to providing a place where families can connect, learn, and celebrate the magic of the harvest season year after year.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing Glen Ray’s Corn Maze has been an exciting journey, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. As with any small business, especially one based on the land, there have been several struggles along the way.
One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced has been pressure from development in the area. As new homes and businesses spring up nearby, we’ve had to adapt to the changing landscape and work harder to maintain our place as a beloved seasonal destination. While the growth brings more people to the area, it also means more competition for attention and resources.
Weather has also been a significant obstacle. Over the years, we’ve had our fair share of bad weather, from heavy rains to early frosts that made it impossible to operate. Some years, we’ve had to close earlier than planned or shorten our activities due to unfavorable conditions, which can be frustrating after months of preparation.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought a whole new set of struggles. Like many businesses, we had to navigate a maze of regulations, social distancing requirements, and changing guidelines. We worked hard to ensure the safety of our guests while still offering the family-friendly experiences that make Glen Ray’s special. It was a tough period, but we persevered, and it made us appreciate the support of our community even more.
In addition to the external challenges, we’ve also had to deal with some difficult guests, vandalism, and even break-ins. Unfortunately, these incidents are part of the reality of running a public business, but they’ve only strengthened our resolve to protect and grow Glen Ray’s.
Despite these hurdles, we continue to move forward, fueled by our passion for the farm and the community. With each struggle, we’ve learned, adapted, and become more committed to offering a place where families can come together, create memories, and enjoy the beauty of farm life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Glen Ray’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch?
Glen Ray’s Corn Maze carries on a special family legacy rooted in generosity and tradition. The farm is named after Grandpa Glen Ray Larsen, a beloved figure in the Leland area. Known for his baby-blue cattle truck and “EET BEEF” license plate, Grandpa Glen was always ready with a good story and a helping hand.
For years, he grew rows of sweet corn and would wake up at dawn to secretly leave bags of it on his neighbors’ porches. His kindness earned him the nickname “Corn Fairy,” a title lovingly given by family and friends. Today, the Corn Fairy lives on as the mascot of Glen Ray’s Corn Maze, a symbol of the farm’s mission to bring joy and connection to all who visit.
With over 50 varieties of pumpkins, a giant interactive corn maze, and attractions like a 50 ft slide, the cow train, giant corn pit, and human hamster wheels, Glen Ray’s offers fun for all ages. The farm school educates over 1,500 students each season, helping kids learn where their food comes from through hands-on experiences. Visitors can also enjoy themed days like Princess/Superhero Day, You’re a Wizard Day, and Pirate/Fairy Day, along with live entertainment from bands, the Ghostbusters, and visiting princesses and superheroes.
For those looking for a scare, Field of Fright is known as the scariest haunted corn maze in Utah. Designed as a haunted farm town, it features chilling characters like the Angry Farmer, the Butcher, and the Wood Cutter, delivering an unforgettable night of fear.
Glen Ray’s also hosts pumpkin decorating parties, date nights, and group events with special discounts. And, of course, no visit is complete without tasting the farm’s famous mini-donuts! Plus pick up a porch decorating package that includes pumpkins, straw bales, corn stalks and everything you need to decorate your porch for fall.
From its deep farming roots to its magical fall experiences, Glen Ray’s Corn Maze continues to grow as a place where families come together, memories are made, and the spirit of Grandpa Glen—the original Corn Fairy—lives on.
