Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Hodge.
Hi Kathy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Providence, RI. At the age of 14, I took up my parents’ oil paints, put them aside since they graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, and started their family of seven children. Like my parents, who met there, I attended RISD and majored in painting. After two years I found it necessary to leave school and work for a year to finance my education. I returned to earn my BFA in Painting at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, MA.
After graduating, I returned to Providence and worked for many years as a newspaper designer and web producer while continuing a dedicated studio practice. I am now a full-time artist and occasional teacher.
Although I am not solely a landscape painter, it has recently been my focus, especially as I have taken inspiration from my appointments as Artist in Residence in 14, soon to be 15, National Parks, and Forests.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Although now I am a full-time painter, for most of my life I have had to work full-time, fitting in studio time whenever possible, which was often frustrating as it interrupted the continuity of my work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an oil painter and also work in Charcoal, Gouache, Printmaking, and Egg Tempera.
What makes you happy?
I am happiest in my studio, or in the larger studio of the natural environment. I am especially happy to work in the western landscape. The space, light, and color of the West, and the interesting geology inspire me to expand my understanding of our planet.
