Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kylie Hughes.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my company in 2020 during the COVID pandemic while attending school at the University of Utah with my degree in Kinesiology and Nutrition. While balancing schoolwork and my company, I was living out in LA and working for a start-up company that was a full-time position.
Along with doing an internship with some of the top trainers in Hollywood who work with a vast majority of clients in the music and film industry to help them with their body transformations happen quickly, efficiently, and in a healthy way. Since I was juggling so much, I was soaking up knowledge from multiple different ends I was absorbing all the knowledge like a sponge.
But let me backtrack a little… When I started college, I was still technically a high school student. I graduated early and started my first-semester spring of 2018. When I first started, I was on track to becoming a nursing student. I thought that was what I wanted, but I found out quickly that it wasn’t what I was going to enjoy. I loved the health and fitness field since I was young and had no idea, I could form a living from this.
My friend told me about Kinesiology, and I was over the moon ecstatic. I enrolled shortly after that conversation into the Kines program at The U. From there, I found my true passion, working in the gym myself and training to have the physique I wanted ever so bad. I went as far as training to step on stage as a bikini competitor. I have been through every high and low within the fitness industry & I try my best to have my clients not experience the lows.
Although I noticed I usually thrived having a coach, someone told me what to do. Since I was a dancer and cheerleader most of my life, I was so used to it. But I later found out that these techniques most of the trainers are doing out there aren’t beneficial long term on certain body types.
I ventured out on my own in 2023 and started coaching myself and when I say it was a game changer, it was most certainly a game changer. Since I have seen myself be the guinea pig, I am not here to see my clients go through the same struggles. I want them to experience how amazing health, fitness, nutrition, and different lifestyle choices can change their lives for the better.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. Obviously, with COVID-19 happening, the training styles were limited, and the majority of individuals wanted to save their money if anything happened.
When I started my business, I still had three semesters left. I was struggling to balance my school, work, and making ends meet. In 2021, I bought my first house, and I was worried about my finances. So, I came to the conclusion that maybe running a business was adding some unnecessary stress along the way, so I sought out a job at a local gym, and unfortunately, my finances took an even deeper dive when working with them.
I essentially started from scratch and had to suspend my personal business, which absolutely devastated me. I was with the company for about a month before I decided I needed to see a shift. I decided nannying might be a good gig for the time being while I restarted building my company from the ground up, and it worked.
I was able to work with the amazing family I had for a solid six months before my business started taking time away from the kids, and I knew they deserved better. Since 2022, I have been running my online coaching company, Built Unique. There have been some intense struggles dealing with finances, but we are managing.
I have loved every minute of the struggle since all I care about is ensuring my clients are getting exactly what they need. So, I am so excited to continue growing and helping all individuals with their health, fitness, and wellness goals.
We’ve been impressed with Built Unique (Legally K Fit Life, LLC), but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a health, fitness, and wellness coach who specializes in women. I help women find their confidence within through the process of fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching. I find joy in helping women find their beauty within to make it shine on the outside so they can see the beauty within them and not harp on the negativity of their body image.
I love working with women who have struggled with hormonal imbalances and gynecological issues such as PCOS or endometriosis. Women’s bodies are so unique, and I feel like each should be treated as such, hence the name Built Unique. My clients are my everything, and I want to help lead them to success and have fun along the way, creating a new and healthier lifestyle.
The pictures below are from my clients and my own personal changes while in the routine; some vary from 1 month of working with me to 6 months of working with me. I am proud of what my company stands for, especially focusing on ensuring I am creating a unique program for each of my clients, unlike most other trainers who tend to copy and paste their own workouts with each of their clients. I am also proud of my education and the continuing education I practice each day with new studies and research. Lastly, I am proud of my perseverance in making this company continue to flourish in such tough times.
I want readers to know how much I care about each one of my clients. I treat them as though they are my best friends. Not only am I a coach, but I am your best friend, someone you can come to with anything you may be dealing with, health-wise or not. I am a support system that can help you both mentally and physically.
