Today we’d like to introduce you to Laser 3.14.
Hi Laser, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in 1972 in Suriname, South America. My parents moved to the Netherlands in 1975. We settled in Amsterdam. My parents were Jehova’s Witnesses so I grew up with religion all around me. I always loved to draw, watch movies, and loved to read. My teachers always said that I had a talent for drawing and that I was very creative.
My parents divorced by the end of the 80s and we moved to a suburban part of Amsterdam. It was there in the early 80s when I started to hear a new kind of music called Rap. Graffiti tags were also emerging and I started to become very interested in both. I saw the emergence of breakdancing and I didn’t know it at the time but it was the emergence of street culture that is still around to this day.
I went to graphic school and found out that a lot of graffiti writers whose work I saw on the streets for years got into that scene. For me, those early days were the stage of the art I’m doing now.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was far from smooth but it was very interesting to have gone through the whole process of finding your voice. Experimenting. One of the struggles I had was that my dream of attending art school never got released. I applied but got rejected. After that, I started going from comic book drawing to illustrating house flyers and painting.
I hardly had money at the time so it was sometimes hard to get all the materials I needed to make art and couldn’t fully realize the ideas I had. At some point, I ran into a wall with painting and I couldn’t do it anymore. The inspiration was gone. But I was already doing poetry so I decided to experiment with writing poetry in the city. That ignited something in me again.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I’m known as Laser 3.14. I’m a street poet who writes short poems, sentences, and remarks on the streets. I only do it on non-permanent surfaces like builder boards. I write about an array of subjects like love, politics, society, my personal opinions, etc.
I’m not the first or will be the last that writes words on the streets but in the graffiti scene, I’m one of the few that have been doing it for so long. Well I’m mainly known for my line and have developed a specific very recognizable style and a personal voice
What do you think about happiness?
My son. I love to him grow and become his person. Finding his way through life. There’s nothing better than that. Music, movies, hanging out with interesting authentic people, and experiencing them as people make me happy.
My family and friends are very cool to be with. I collect records and DJ those are things I love. Working at night in Amsterdam and putting up my art always makes me happy
